1973 Durban sativa (poison) "The Green Pheno"- a collective history of a South African sativa

I agree elevation makes both fat leaves, and shorter flowering, but not to such a great extent as with 8 week Durban Poison. 12 weeks plus flowering seems to be the cutoff in all these regions.
But these regions have something else in common. A known or suspected influx of genetics from more northerly regions.
Mexico- Nepal/ Philippines( a true enigma)
Congo- kush genetics arrive ww2- 1950’s
South East Asia 1800’s- ? Yunnan and Hainan peoples migrate South
South Africa- Indian Laborers/ slaves/ Arabic traders
I still think that when flower times are drastically shorter than what a climate allows, it shows that the genetics originally came from a more Northern locale.
Almost all genetics came from somewhere else originally.

Well back then (in the late 80ies) it was a homeland and you could move around pretty much unhindered however Transkei was a pretty average smoke that you smoked when you couldn’t get anything better, we used to go up to the villages like Poenskop next to Port St jones and a get it for next to nothing from the locals mind you not every one of them was allowed to grow it.

well Durban was and still is a centre for Indians that first came to South Africa as indentured labourers.

What my friend says, is that Indian slaves were kept by Tribals in the Kwazulu area around 150 years ago. So, this pre dates the Boer War and puts the timeline during the Anglo- Zulu war of 1879. This makes total sense to me. I now understand Why there were prisoners taken…it was wartime in Kwazulu Natal, with the Indian prisoners captured at Rorke’ Drift or Isandlwana battlefields. Seems very reasonable that the Indian Laborers would have had a bag of homegrown with them when captured. I can believe that.
I don’t doubt much Transkei is garbage, but I have read that some Transkei is fantastic.( the pissy plants)Just have to search for the good plants, ( some know where to find them)or treat the finished product with some love. Its the same with nearly all landraces. Gotta find the diamond in the rough.

More like needle in a haystack. Kei strains are the worst imo. They look great tho, big strong bushy trees. Mid ass smoke

I have read the pissy phenos have a 4 hour high. Ever come across one like this?

Trees indeed! Here is modern Kwazulu landrace

Yeah a four hour shit high. I’ll give it that, most of the Kei strains work well into an hour or more but its not great. Worse is when you get a paranoia inducing one and you feel the need to hide away for the whole day.
The only african heirloom worth smoking imo is Malawi. Get and go juice right there. The rest is meh.

Its why every time outside genetics showed up the locals grabbed it. Nothing to do with shorter times or yield. Everything else just smokes better.

If you get any mint smells, burn that shit down its gross.

I’ve got to get into my Malawi seed someday. Special stuff. No doubt!

Yeah I’d recommend that over anything else from this side of the pond. Just a tough one to grow with it taking about 250 weeks to flower

Sounds good, but 30 mins seems like forever to be waiting for the real high to kick in.
Meds are given intravenously because the bloodstream can move meds to the brain and through out the body in a matter of seconds. The effects can then be felt almost instantly.
Smoking cannabis exhibits the same immediate onset because inhalation immediately delivers the cannabinoids to the lungs, the heart and the brain. From there it flows to the rest of the body so there should be no waiting time to feel the effects of the cannabinoids.
What we perceive as waiting for the bud to kick in or get good, is actually the time that it takes for our bodies to react to the cannabinoids of that particular strain.
In that regard, smoking bud is very similar to shooting up. Our bodies reaction to the smoke is based on that particular strain.
Due to the ever increasing popularity of concentrates, it obvious that most strains lack the potency to effect most people bodies quickly. Most people are like me and want instant gratification when it comes to getting lifted.
I enjoy the feeling of my soul being released from my body.
From that point i begin to enjoy my trip throughout the universe as my body awaits the return of my soul. My mind, body and soul get a much needed break from the stress and anxiety of everyday life.

Recently had a Minty Kashmir. Always thought i would love minty pot, but its kind of nasty. Reminds me of the menthol Marlboro i used to smoke. Yuck!
Add some Pine or Citrus terps, though and boy is that some tasty smoke! Love it!.

Yeah the minty pheno also smoked like menthol cigs. There’s a aniseed / medicine taste pheno that is the better one. Still an odd-ish taste but usually the better high.

You mention medicine smell…Cannabiogen Durban had this terrible chemical medicine thing going on. I can’t quite place the smell. So close though. One day I’ll describe it well. I’ve smelled the smell before. Maybe its this same smell you speak of?

I’m surprised you guys don’t like the menthol mint phenos. I had a NL5xNLHaze line where the menthol mint would show up, like Wrigleys Doublemint gum. It wasn’t something I wanted all the time, but it was different from anything else I had. I understand where you’re coming from though. I feel the same way about cat piss bud, that smell turns my stomach Lol.

Malawi was also great because of how it was cured/stored, smooth smoke that went down the bottleneck pipe like honey. Packaging was also great it was like opening a Christmas present and those huge seeds that were easy to pick in the dark.

No Seeds of Africa strains in my collection. Or any seed company beans from Africa, except for Kenya and Sinai. My African strains (28+ now) came from bag weed seeds in the 1980s, from trades with breeders I knew in CA, MA and MN, from trades with people in the old collectives in Europe, from cuts and dispensary weed seeds when Oregon was medical only, or from gifts directly (or indirectly) from people in Africa. The Pondo seeds came from the later. I was called a’Pondo.
