What I have found to have the best results is even watering . When growing in the ground water past the drip line a sprinkler works great . When flooding with an open hose a lot of water goes straight down next to the main stem and may cause root problems if you have hardpan or heavy clay . They love nice moist soil not soggy . Most of the growers around me grow in bags and the best results is even watering right out to the edge of the bags . Hard to over water with grow bags they drain so well we have raised beds also that work fantastic for growing we hand water with a wand . But in the end whatever works best for you . I have been flooding my bags all season with this record heat in my part of the state . I water every day with a bubbler until water starts to run over the edge . My root systems are massive Happy Growing . If you have Google Earth look at Covelo California everyone in town grows in bags . The whole round valley area grows in bags
My veggie patch which holds all the cannabis is like a giant raised bed, as itās sectioned off and higher elevation than the grass areas or other parts of the backyard. I water exclusively around the perimeter of the trellis at the drip line. Of course yesterday flooding the beds, the water is gonna flow near the main stem as well. When I hand water using the sprayer, I could literally stand there what seems all day and the ground never seems to be moist. The hellish bermuda grass has grown back into the patch literally back to lawn status. So the plants are growing in a lawn now. It takes a hell of a lot of water to get past the lawn now basically. Iāve been watering out there every 2 to 3 days and it didnāt seem to be enough. Honestly, I donāt have enough hours in the week to water everyday for a few hours at a time. When I said I let the hose run yesterday until I sloshed in a puddle that was only until I moved the hose. Drainage doesnāt seem to be a problem, as once I moved the hose, the puddle soaked in within a minute. My bed is seemingly never moist as the grass sucks all the water at the first few inches. Since the plants arenāt drooping and the leaves feel good, Iām just gonna hope for the best that they donāt get any root problems from flooding the beds as thatās about all I can do at this point with their seemingly unquenchable thirst. I def donāt think they are over watered. Iām not even sure they could be overwatered in that bed as it goes so deep and my soil is not hard clay. If nothing else, Iām growing some really nice grass out there! lol
You know after I wrote this I was out back thinking how while Iām on here lamenting about the amount of time itās taking me to water, this is a cake walk compared to what was going on at the same time last year. Last year, right around now, the shit started hitting the fan. I didnāt realize the extent of the caterpillar issue in Southern Cali and had not even begun to spray for them. Suddenly, I was picking them out of my buds by the hundreds and they had destroyed a lot of bud, pretty much overnight. Then as some of you remember, to top that off, I was ill prepared with trellising and plants started trying to uproot and fall over from weight. I specifically remember 2 days that I had to skip work to fix and stabilize plants. Jimmy rigging pulleys, levers, stakes etcā¦ to anchor the damn plants up, all the while picking off giant caterpillars. So, I guess if one live baby caterpillar and hours of watering are my only problems right now, then Iām doing pretty good. For nowā¦ September will be the real test as the buds are soon enough gonna start pulling those branches down. My fingers are crossed that the new trellises are gonna keep everything nice and supported and that I can kill enough baby caterpillars each week to keep the buds nice and bud rot at bay. If I recall, the 2 plants that got pm last year started in September as well. Letās hope Iāve put enough air flow into those plants. We had that crazy humidity for the last 2 weeks and knock on wood, no pm yet.
My 4 inch top dressing is bermuda grass! lol
Drip irrigation for next season ā¦?
I wish I knew how to do that @Sunvalley. Maybe that should be my next research project during the fall and winter.
Sounds like a lot of digging. lol You know how much we outdoor growers love to dig! Good times!
I had to get the 6 foot ladder out to BT spray the top of the cheese. I was just doing a hail Mary before and hoping the spray made it up there with the hose. Since I saw that baby pillar, Iāve had to get a little more intense with making sure as much gets covered as possible. Still canāt believe how big that damn plant is. Def the biggest one Iāve grown so far. While the Strawberry Diesels that I grew last year were 10 feet, they were sativas, so just spindly. The cheese is exponentially bigger. Dad said itās starting to look like a mendo plant. Good grief. Itās cool having one of my plants get this huge, but if I had a choice, they would all stay at a more manageable 6 feet or so. Itās one thing to watch those giant plant grows and another to actually do the growing. lol Iām still just one middle aged lady, with a business and limited amount of energy. This grow makes me wish for the energy of my younger days, thatās for sure.
And I know what youāre thinkingā¦ Hereās @gramps who has 30 years on me, running circles around me making me look lazy with his giant garden. Well, shut up! He obviously has some sort of super powers or is an alien or something. Hahaha!
No digging for the drip Meesh it all lays on top easy to put together even for an old guy . I have a system buried and piped with risers and six way heads all over the garden but I donāt use it . I like to hand water but itās easy to put auto timers on a drip system thereās manual like a wind up clock or batteries or plug into the house how much do you want to spend . Amazon has a lot listed .
Damn, I typed out a big reply to a post but never hit send. I wonder if pot has something to do with it? Maybe next time , lol
I love the bag ideas and Iād like to get a few of those going on my place. I have to keep collecting soil in order to fill them. Are yours 100-120 gallon @gramps? You and meesh and sunvalley are killing it in the size department. peace
The big girl department are 400 gal but the 100s work great . It takes about 2 yards to fill a bag thatās a full sized pickup heaped lol .
Are those roughly 10lbāers?
Speaking of yieldā¦ Letās take a guess at what the cheese will yield. Iāll bookmark this spot and I can come back to this in October after harvest and we can see how close we are.
@cannabissequoia Iām thinking 10 pounds per plant in @gramps monster bags is seriously low balling it. He says heās got at least like 200 colas and my guess is that was a conservative estimate.
Hi @Meesh I just got caught up on this thread
Itās an amazing read
I enjoyed it greatly
Peace

Read my post over on smokers lounge .
OMG! I just watched my video for the first time. I am a silly fool when Iām high! Hahahaha! What a rambler!
Easy kilo on that cheese
I still canāt figure out which clone you were thinking looks like the Bruce plantā¦maybe 88g13?
It was the first one you said was a clone in your pic. Your OG resembles Bruce too
