I was going to send someone in Canada some seeds. I went to the Post office. They wanted 50 Bucks for the Letter and told me, that the guy in Canada also has to pay 50 Bucks in Tariffs if he wants to take the letter home.
The new tariffs has made sending letters three times as expensive for me ![]()
Edit - I will know for sure soon as I have to send out letters and will update here.

I’m really confused. Why would the USPS charge you customs duties imposed by Canada?
There shouldn’t be any customs duty on gifts or items under $60 Canadian, so you could mark it as a gift?
I presume these are purchased seeds?
WTF?
Yeah I wanna. know a little more details cause this is fucked up.
Do you mean bubble mailer?
I think a letter just needs stamps…
No politico
The last couple packages I’ve sent to Canada required the receiver to pay around $30-$50 in tariffs which made me stop mailing direct to anywhere but the US.
Nah it’s just the whole world still hasn’t figured out how to do mail right after thousands of years
we should go back to messenger pidgeons
Can’t speak for how our Canadian friends feel about their mail service, but it seemed to all work pretty well until… 9 months ago. I guess some Januarys just hit different than others. So random.
Hey @TonesOwn I agree but could i use a falcon so my mail gets extra shipping protection ![]()

Its like $1.70 for a global forever stamp that will ship 1 envelope up to 1 ounce as long as its 1/4" thick of less.
You can use a coin flip and a rubber hose washer. Up to 5 of those full of seeds is under an ounce. Each can hold 10-15 seeds. So 50 seeds in an envelope.
So i used a regular envelope and that was filled with 2 pieces of corugated cardborad. That’s it.
On the weekend, I’ll go to another Post office and try again and this time I’ll make a Video.
Please , keep the Politics out of it…
We have a lot of Hawks down here. I love Hawks.
We have a lot of red tails.
Letters themselves are not affected by tariffs, as tariffs are taxes imposed on imported goods and do not apply to postal services like letters.
If your letter was interpreted as possibly having goods inside. Lumps, thick, heavy or stiff. Would explain why they wanted to charge you tariffs.
Hose washers are the most stealthy way to send imo. You also don’t need to interact with a postal worker to send a letter. Just add the appropriate amount of stamps and drop it in a drop box.
I wouldn’t think it would, but do the two pieces of cardboard make it thicker than a 1/4 inch? That’s the maximum thickness for letter mail. Not sure if the stiffness is also an issue, like it might be under a 1/4 inch but not be machinable?
Sounds like you know what you’re doing, but still, curious.
