I had to completely reinstall everything.
- delete the devices from the software
- remove the app from the phone/ipad (completely- not just offload - get rid of files)
- reset the controller to factory setting
- reinstall the app
- enable Bluetooth on controller and phone/ipad
- configure WiFi
- re-configure controller preferences/settings
