Algae in Hydroponic Basin

I’ve had an algae bloom in my reservoir for about a week now and I’m starting to have some symptoms on my plants. Is the algae causing this and is there any way for me to get rid of the algae?

Hey man, welcome to OG.

That isn’t that bad… now if there’s a green cloud in the water you can freak out

Do your best to block any light getting into the buckets; cover them in black/white poly, paint them (next run)… get creative. I can see right through the netpot into the res in pic #3, I’d add more hydroton , or cut a small piece of black poly and cover the hole netpot.

Won’t give any advice on adding anything to the res to kill it bc I have no clue how much you’d have to add… but its probably going to be peroxide.

Good luck!

Aluminum foil + spray on glue works really well too!

Best of success @TChed , you’re growing in a pond right now which is also doable!

I doubt the algae is causing it, my plants seem to not mind growing in algae at all. I did outdoor kratky in clear jars last summer, even when they got thick green they did ok. I’d check calibration of your ph meter and tds meter

Copper pipe or fitting in your water supply…drop it in there and forget. Problem solved

Like the cheapest smallest copper fitting at home depot lowes ace hardware.
1 per bucket.

Just dont throw a penny in there…too much zinc, not enough copper

You’re saying just put a piece of pure copper in the reservoir?

Unless the penny is 1857 or older.

Thats exactly what im saying…

Ive got a 1/2inch 90elbow treating 50ish gall9ns of water. Cost me less than 3 bucks

That’s a good idea, i never had an issue with it but i’ll keep the copper in mind.

Get those light leaks sealed up as stated above. Your resivor should be pitch black or as close as you can get to it. Algae doesn’t hurt the roots per se but it will smother the roots and compete for oxygen. That lack of oxygen promotes root rot. Not sure if you’re running a sterile reservoir or beneficial bacteria but fixing the light leaks and change the reservoir for best result Cheers !!!
