It means you’ve smothered the ground and its become anaerobic, hence the ammonia smell. The combination of ewc and over watering will make a mess. Similar to compost that gets funky when its too wet / moist with mostly green plant material.
Not sure how to remedy it beside either removing the ground you put down or holding up on watering until the smell goes away. Maybe even both
