And so it begins... New breeding and Research project. Growing 88G13/HP, Mule Fuel, and 88G13/HP x Mule Fuel

Hieee,
Guppygirl here. So, I’m very interested in some research I’ve seen coming out of Korea on male reversal. I’m going to attempt to replicate those results in this grow. Wish me luck! I also plan to make BX lines of both, and F2s of Bodhi’s excellent Mule Fuel x 88G13/HP.
I was thinking, I might post pictures and stuff here. There isn’t a lot to show at the moment - I just popped the beans. But I think I will learn a lot.
That research on male reversal? I think it has a whole bunch of interesting applications. Not the least of which is backing up and recreating elite males. Or even just taking an elite male and rerolling the dice. Why not? I can, so I will.

Thanks! I’m really excited about this grow. I have run Mule Fuel twice before, and I have clones from two different sources of it that aren’t shown. I’m REALLY looking forward this so much! One of the nicest things said to me this year at the DGC Cup was a big compliment on my Mule Fuel, so I want to enter it in next year’s Cup.

And while I’m at it, why not make BX’s in both directions? Could find something fun!

The male reversal research is particularly interesting. It seems several people have achieved a good result with an off-the-shelf product called Florel, which has a 3.9% concentration of Ethephon. I’d like to get closer to 5% concentration, but the results seen with 3.9% are encouraging. I’d love to see a full rather than a partial reversal, but at least this works.

A lot of people think that this isn’t a viable or valuable avenue of research, but I think it is for three reasons:

  1. Male reversal allows you to see a male that has only had recombination with itself, allowing you to see potentially thousands of variations on essentially the same male. Imagine starting with an Elite male and then doing this.
  2. Evaluation of the female offspring will reveal any homogenous genetic traits that are undesirable, like the expression of intersex traits. It will also show double dominant traits, not all of which are good.
  3. And lastly, I think that pure research for the sake of research is never a bad thing.

Im sure you will do well…Dont listen to what people say if you think its worth it it is right
Maybe do some research sounds like you know alot about it maybe you and a smart friend could make your 5% concentration

Fortunately, I have laboratory experience and schooling. I could make the compound myself, but I wanted to start with Florel for one fundamental reason: It’s one of the most commonly used chemicals in agriculture, and it’s mostly used on food, or other common plants. Thus, people can buy it in a store and replicate the technique. It’s safe at that concentration, and the risks and safety considerations are well-known, solved problems. It has an MSDS from every company that makes it. It’s inexpensive. But mostly, I don’t want to create another “EliteX” type of thing where you can’t figure out what’s inside - they wouldn’t even send me the MSDS.

Power to the growers! Information wants to be free! Plus, I come from an Open Source computing background, so this really matters to me a lot. I hate seeing people pay the “Green” tax. One of my research goals is to publish all the details of all the research I do and place it under the Creative Commons attribution license, which is a lot like placing it in the public domain. That means anyone can use it; they just have to credit where the parts they use came from. Seems pretty fair.

Wow that awesome. Okay so sounds like your trying to pioneer an easier chemical for the everyday grower or am i wrong

That would definitely open some eyes

With a small amount of chemistry knowledge I dont see how one couldn’t increase purity of Florel via something like distillation.

She can but she wants to keep it easy for the grower to access the product, ingredients etc

Sorry guppygirl if im partially wrong please make it noted

I’ve heard that ethephon is best for male reversals. Debacco did a great video on the studies and applications. From a breeding standpoint it’s pretty interesting, should help find a good male to pass on it’s aroma and resin.

You can even self seed a male to it’s own flowers and it will produce viable xy seeds.

Unfortunately after some extra research I found out that you can’t safely smoke any of the bud so it’s purely for breeding purposes.

What’s more interesting to me personally is grafting a female plant onto male rootstock while leaving a few male branches at the bottom for pollen. The graft will grow into a full female plant that can be smoked

Check this out I seen it on Reddit a long time ago

If I remember right he has like 15-20 different strains grafted onto another seperate strains rootball

When you’ve got a 4 plant limit but want to keep all of the mom’s :joy:

This is a really cool project that should be explored more, and it’s exciting to see you working on it! From reading, the Y chromosome carries more genetic information than the X, and might be neat to see the recombination effect from the male Y compared to the female X in the same strain. I’m curious if it brings out more end result traits compared to reversing a female, or if reversing a female deletes some traits from “losing” the y side from the male.

Welcome to OG! This looks like it will be a fun project with some great strains. Will be interesting to see how things turn out w/ the reversals. Best of luck!

The best part is, I’m not really even pioneering it - I’m just validating research that has already been done to see if we can replicate the results. Thanks to Google Translate and the like, it’s really easy to find interesting and novel research in other languages now. No credit due to me, I’m just an old labbie putting her skills to use. And my reward is the good weed. That I’ll take credit for. LOL
