I always liked the sound of a banjo, it’s got a unique sound. Ken Burns did a doc about Country music on PBS, and when they got to Bluegrass, they did a profile on Earl Scruggs. Man, that dude was a mutant. I think he was 19 when he joined The Bluegrass Boys. They had a bunch of clips covering his career, and in all the ones you see of him playing, he has this little smile on his face like, “Yeah, that’s right, you sons-a-bitches wish you could do this.”:rofl::rofl::rofl:

There’s a dividing line in the history of banjo playing, and it’s Earl. He invented frailing, and there maybe players who are as good as he was, but I’ve never heard anyone better. Earl Scruggs was the Eddie Van Halen of banjo players.

He sure can pick, and I love that you mention that little smirk he always seemed to have on while he was playing. The guy was a legend. Some mean pickers coming up now days though, go give Billy Strings a listen if you haven’t heard him before

Billy used to do some good shit! Is he still playing these days? Last time I can’t remember hearing that name was like 2012 when he was just getting big. If I remember correctly he was from Traverse city area?

He has blown the F up the last couple years. Won a Grammy for his album Home released last year. His bands been pretty much straight touring for a couple months now. Yeah he is from outside Traverse City, MI but that northern boy sure can pick n sing!!

I love the banjo, I have a lot of fun on it! I listen and play bluegrass. Not to good yet, but I would really like to get one with a resonater on it… but beggers can’t be chosers. I see myself sitting on the front porch playing music for and to myself whilst annoying the hell out of the neighbors lol

My best sounding ( and looking) acoustic. Ibanez Acoustic Electric. Quilted maple top, back and sides. With a genuine rosewood fingerboard.

Check him out on YouTube. Lots of favorites but one of my favorite sets is live at the Stone Pony sets 1&2. The lighting is trash but smoke a fatty and sit back, your mind is about to be straight blown

I mentioned in a post 6+ months ago in this thread that I don’t have the patience and dedication it takes to master an instrument… so I became a taper. I make audio recordings of live music performances for archival purposes, my own enjoyment, and sharing with other music fans. When a band gives permission, Archive.org allows me to upload my recordings where they will host them (hopefully forever!) for free and legal streaming or download.

I recorded Billy Strings at a festival in 2018 which you can check out HERE..

That’s beautiful man. Always liked the quilted stuff.

The Stone Pony is 20 mins away from me. There’s a couple bands coming through in August I’ll probably go see.

Wow that is gorgeous! The sides matching the front and back is something I don’t see to often as well.

What’s a good nut for my cheapo strat plastic or bone

For the extra couple bucks I would get a Tusq nut. The material allows the string to slide easier in the groove. This will keep the guitar from going out of tune so quick.
On the other hand. Plastic and bone nuts will be a cheap fix. If you get a lead pencil and shave some of the carbon and use a toothpick to put it in the nut groove the strings will glide better.
