Any hunters on the forum?

ya I have a rule with bears… if they are inside my 50 yard radius and not running the other direction… tag or no tag , they get one warning shot but the next one will be lethal.
I’ve only had to exercise that rule twice in 30years.

Yes, I expect that although I have spent a significant time in the bush, at least for kid who lived in the city for a good potion of my childhood learning how animals think and reading the land much like I can read a rapid on the fly when I am canoeing some big water. I am actually very excited, my Dad did a lot of hunting at my age and has been telling me stories about it. That’s partially what inspired me to get my gun/hunting license.

I am lucky to have a cabin thats pretty much surrounded by crown land that I know well. I will try my hand there at first… or at least that my idea. When is the drawing for tags by the way in ALberta?

I bow hunted elk in Col. The wrangler told us a story where he was cow calling with a client in front in a pile of rocks expecting the bull to come around the bottom of the pile. The bull walks right in the middle about 15 ft in front of the client. The wrangler whispered Draw draw! The bull looked strait at them and let loose a bugle and walked on. The client stood up shaking and had pissed his pants .lol

We have a ton of bears in our area. I’ve been as close at 20 yards yelling at them, they don’t care.

Id say i want to be able to shoot bear here in iowa and on the eastern side, thats not gonna happen, as least unless the black bears from missouri start moving up… we have one male black bear that migrates through every couple years but hes set in where hes going…

Though i do have bobcat and cougar around here… almost died last year tracking a downed deer when i walked up on a cougar deciding it was claiming my kill… pretty sure we both scared the hell out of each pther but i wasnt about to drag that doe out if the mountain lion thinks it belongs to it so it got a free meal and i called the dnr cuz i wasnt gonna get in trouble for wanton waste as i wasnt gonna get mauled dragging out a 110lb little doe

we frequently have the wildlife i the yard. Not as many deer as usual this year but the bears always pass through as the denning up season approaches. Had one hanging around for near a week and the dog chased it off twice before it got the idea. Cougars are not frequent but last year we had one hanging around and I took that pretty serious. Same with the one the other night. There is plenty of wild game out there for cougars to hunt so when they come close to the houses, they are hunting peoples pets. Two years ago a black bear killed and ate a neighbors pitbull… was a crazy story but I wasn’t there. Lots of hobby farm and ranch properties here too and the cougars can be a real problem. They are the one animal that puts me on my highest alert and I don’t go outside at night without a weapon LOL

Yea there are a some goat and sheep farms, couple llamas and alpaca places and a huuuge elk farm near us so cougars stay pretty fed if they can scale fences…

im in town but on the side of the river and recently been more and more sightings of the cougar near us

Sounds like we are in fairly similar areas. We are just starting to get more bobcats in the area, and the occasional Lynx. We mainly have coyotes, foxes, fishers, weasels, and black bears raiding chicken coups.

we have lots of lynx and bobcat here too. Actually rescued a litter of bobcats a few years ago. The mother had been attacked my something and was found dead that morning in my friend’s driveway of the property. Next day there was kittens wandering around. Was kinda fun playin with them but we had to gather them all up and take them to the critter care.
Here’s a close encounter pic hehehe

came right up and smelled the rifle barrel LOL

Cats are insane animals to me.

That’s amazing! Wild cats are just magical, I saw my first Bobcat out in the woods a few years ago and I had to keep doing double takes.

Those are awesome! I tied flies when I was a teenager and caught a few trout on them. Then I got into fixing meth for a few years and never went back to flies.

I have been thinking about tying flies a lot lately. I had a stroke 6 years ago and it damaged the fine motor control of my left hand (I’m a righty). I’ve been thinking of tying in regards to physical therapy. My motor control has improved a lot in the intervening years, I’d guess I’m at 80 or perhaps 85%, but I want to improve it further. (Being on a desktop and doing all this typing on a standard keyboard also acts as PT I think.) This kind of fine work could really improve my fine motor control through neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to build new neural networks. I’ve been doing Pilates for just about a year now, and have seen serious improvement on the left side of my body, the affected side, in more gross motor skills like simply walking straight as well as some range of motion issues.

It’s been nearly 60 years since I tied a fly, but I find your photos inspiring.

Thank you very much for posting them, @Motaco.

@mota , I have extra vises, bobbins materials etc. From flea market fire sales. I’d be glad to send a starter kit to you. There used to be folks around interested, but not much so any more.

It’s no big thing , just things I saved from vendors that didn’t know what they were. This is my small set up ,it’s all I need.

Those tools look very familiar! Seeing them I can almost recall what they feel like in my hands. This is very exciting! I’ve literally been thinking about this for the last couple of years. No way I could have tied a fly a year or two ago, but I believe (and hope) I’m at a point in my rehab that I may be able to manage. d8JBdDJ

Thanks again!

Yesterday I was partaking in my nontraditional hunting while I saw this guy. He flapped his tail up and took off toward the other treeline and stuck around grazing a few minutes. Made me hungry
