They are amazing yet super destructive forces of nature and have studied/kept up with them for many years. In 2019 there was a certain ef-4 tornado that zipped about 1 mile away from my rental house at the time and clearly remember ears popping with a strange stillness in the air. Here are a few photos of the big boys
How about earthquakes? We don’t get them down south but pretty scary stuff… especially that 2011 earthquake and tsunami that hit Asia and in particular Japan.
In 1980 we had 7 tornadoes come thru my home town of GrandIsland Nebraska. I can still recall being huddled under a desk at the bottom of my grand parents steps. They caused a bunch of damage of course, however we all got “I survived the GI twisters” T-Shirts and they buried all the debris making a perfect sledding spot known as tornado hill.
The local gymnastics organization was named GI twisters in honor of the event. In my late teens we’d regularly get stoned and chase tornadoes when the sirens went off. Lots of experiences with tornadoes in my past. lol
Watching any rapid flooding is always insane to me so I love to watch videos of it. I’ve watched a few great documentaries about earthquakes and the tsunamis that followed recently like the 2011 Japan one and the 2004 Indonesia/Thailand one. It’s just nuts to imagine living through something like that. Watching crazy weather videos has made me fully appreciate why people used to believe that gods were mad at them.
This documentary on the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami called “The First 3 Days” is breathtaking with the clips they use from while it was happening. It’s just unimaginable.
Unlike tornado alley, or the southern tier of states, we will on rare occasions have tornado’s here in Michigan where some damage can occur. At least when we are fleeing fowl weather, we don’t have to worry about stepping on a poisonous snake or walking too close to alligator infested swamps.
This is not meant to in any way detract from the horrible destruction of the destructive force of tornado’s. I’ve watched enough episodes of Storm Chasers, and have seen how horrible they can be to whole communities in the loss of life and property. Prayers go out to those that have had to endure one or the wrath of hurricanes. I’m just glad Michigan has a low number of tornado’s comparatively speaking.
I saw a video during hurricane Milton in Florida last year where people went back to their home after the water started to recede and there was a big ass alligator sitting inside the house in 6 inches of water.
I grew up in the southern tornado alley. As a kid I was always as afraid of a tornado ripping the roof off the grow room or slinging plants across the yard and causing more trouble than the loss of property. lol
Growing up I never had a tornado in my state
But we’ve had hurricanes wow what a devastating storm
Remember sandy
But now we have had 4 or 5 a year
Small ones but tornadoes just the same
One 2 years ago the news reported one was heading towards my development and to take cover
We have no basements in this development
So we had a tornado party in the bath tub
Me the mrs and the dog and a pound of weed just Incase lol
Oh yeas lighter and papers as well
Lived/grew all over the USA, and been through too many to count. Some without any damage to me or mine, some with loss/injuries. None of em fun
edit… can’t consider myself a tornado enthusiast, more of a hater.
I’ve always been super interested in all extreme weather. When I was a kid I’d watch the weather channel over cartoons then eventually living in Florida I stayed for Hurricane Ian and experienced it first hand and it was not a fun experience. Our house was in the west side of the eyewall for hours we never got to see the calm of the eye just the change of wind direction. Had our walls and windows breathing in and out and all our drains and toilets were gurgling. The marina I worked at was destroyed and clocked in a wind gust at 210 mph before the meter broke Heres a few pics from the madness
