As I plan out my new year I’d like to get back into a routine of pollen chucking. I’ve done a few reversals over the years with a range of success but never a large open pollination sufficient enough to collect seeds in numbers viable to trade with you all. I wanna change that!
I have a few og kush projects in the works but as a first step down this path I would like to run something more in the cookies space as I tend to smoke more of that than anything else. I’ve been so indecisive though about the pollen donor selection. Essentially it comes down to either mango mintality (pcg) or blue limonene (grandiflora). That said they’re both heavily influenced by cookies. Pretty much everything I’ve read on here suggest that if I take a cookies cut, reverse it onto my stable I’ll get a metric ton of seeds that are prone to herms. I see so many cookies crosses in seed form available commercially that seems relatively stable. Just taking a quick look I see a ton of animal cookies crosses out out by seed junky. Animal cookies is about as pure a cookies line as it gets, if there were herm problems with the progeny wouldn’t be have used a different cut?
Is there any truth to this notion that cookies cuts are bad pollen donors?
Thanks ahead of time for your thoughts. I haven’t been in the breeding game for almost three years now, time to get back into the swing of it
I worked extensively with the Thin Mint and the GSC (fems F1s production), and that’s not a specific concern with these cuts like it is for a SD, a C91, a GG4, a TW … if we are talking about the stability of the direct generation of the reversal only ofc.
Now between a Thin Mint and a RS11 or a WC … you have a good decade of irresponsible chunking that promoted exponentially herms.
Not at all ^^, it’s a big mess based on a GSC x OGK structure. I mean it’s obvious in growth, none pure cookie is so large and … kushy in shape ^^ Its not their “ultimate cookie”, it’s just an inspired blend.
But it don’t change much the fundamentals, the “cookies” are not specifically prone to herm. When we are talking about true cookie projects.
I milked the fuck the Thin Mint during a short period, best pollen donor ever to make fems ^^ She print always the floral and cookie-fy anything like a barman. Like the SD as pollen donor, but without the herms ^^
update for more detailled stuff for your project :
I had the original cookies, thin mints, forum, and the original 3 gelatos as cuts. All from the bay area. Not like most folks taking in fakes from online randos. They never hermed for me, but they did for a lot of synth growers. Cookies arent bred, theyre a series of bagseed from previous herms. Its really tough to take a line that has such a dominant herm trait and remove it. Not impossible, but itll take a lot of work.
Its not, its a cookies outcross. The original cookies cuts arent really around anymore, at least that Ive seen. But they were very crappy plants to grow. Ive brought a lotta cuts through the stable over the years, and those original 3 were some of the worst.
Rumor has it that Cookies came from Cherrypie that hermed and entire room from light leaks and they grew out the beans from it so it wouldnt suprise me but i wouldnt hold my breath.Ive had more Gorilla glue pop nanners than any cookie i grew but the only cookie i ever grew was the Platinum Bay Edition Cookies and from what i heard from my California connect was that cookie didnt have anything to do with cookie Fam so ???
Can’t say cookie specifically but I did have some gelato clones that threw some balls on the lower stem. I picked them off and they did not develop further.
A few accidental seeds, even if you don’t want to use them, is not so bad if the smoke is awesome.
Personally I avoid herm anything but exceptions can be made.
Niiiiiceee. It sounds like I should go ahead and do this, then run a few testers just in case. I don’t mind a nanner or two, it’s never been a huge problem for me. I pluck em off and call it a day. My bud only goes to my friends, if they want to complain about a seed or three on the free bud I gave them they can go fuck themselves. What I don’t want is to have sent out a bunch of herm bombs to you all and polute any chances of future trades. That’s the real danger.
I think I’ll pick the MM cut as a mother. Whole BL is probably ‘better’ in terms of terps the MM has a killer structure, thick strong branches and a heavy heavy yield. Plus she has this really nice fruity strip gum terp thing that I get a ton of positive feedback on.
i grew three of the US-GSC clones:
platinum, forum and thin mint cookies.
all of them herm here and there, if stressed
(other stuff gets triggered easier, tho … imho.)
__
it’s no secret that lines made from hermie-prone cultivars are prone
themselves … the original cookie lineage has prone parents on both
sides, nuff said
Well personally ive grown quite a few different cookies and cookie hybrids with no issues. Only 1 went herm on me it was a do si dos, but rest were fine out of probably 30 individuals over the years. Don’t know if that helps or not but thats my experience. Just harvested a forum cookies hybrid recently…no intersex either.
The key is dont overfeed or stress them too much and you should be good imo. Tbh thats true for alot of the newer super hybrid clone only x clone only
If you like gelato, seek out the grandiguava cut. It’s pretty wildly distributed and cheap (<$50). It’s got a similar profile to gelato but yields better, is easier to grow, and is far easier to purple up if you chill the room or ice the root ball. Rumer has it that she was a bag seed grandiflora found but not entirely sure. Before the demand for gelato kinda died off, my buddies that run hoop houses were running gelato 33/41 and GG pretty much exclusively. I could barely tell GG from 33, 41 was more earthy less candy
I keep GG around, will absolutely be making seeds with her in the near future. Desert high clones carries 33, 41 and 45 if you’re in CA
I have some fem gelato seeds that have been just sitting there figured id give one a spin.I have Some GG as well I had someone on here give me a Chem 91/GG#4 cross that was absolutely divine.Flowered with a dirty feet smell that evolved into a Coca Cola earthy Purple Box Chowards scented gum sweet and savory taste and smell little rockhard ping pong ball buds everywhere Absolutely no herms on that one.I thought some of the tennis ball smell of the chem would be in there but wasnt.I wasnt complaining very warm huggy Stone that went from the top of your head to the bottoms of your soles lasted for hours
Oh sorry, I shouldn’t have used the GG abv. It’s not gorilla glue. It’s a cut from grandiflora mark that pcg was distributing for years up until just recently. Really easy to find in dispensaries too if you’re in CA.
If you’re by chance licensed, highline sells flats of 18 for like $150
Highline serves CA, they have storefronts in la and Humboldt but also do drops in sac. I buy my cuts at the dispensary since I’m just a dude but if you’re licensed, highline is 1000% the way to go. Very professional, clean cuts, cheap af. Even if something ‘isnt on the menu’, if you call a couple weeks ahead they’ll get you squared away. Pretty much everyone I know that’s legal goes through them.
I’m that case I’ll take care of ya!
Can’t speak for NY, CA is the only state aside from Hawaii that has import export laws on live plants which nixes and possibly of sending clones legally (not just MJ, we have fucking border checkpoints for plants)
Yep. Until recently my family was heavily into avocado and citrus, as well as hoop houses for short term crops like tomatoes. Fruit flies have the potential to decimate the ag industry so they setup checkpoints all along the eastern border. In many ways socal is like an island. There really isn’t much to the east of la / SD for several hours aside from desert, meth and hillbillies so it’s somewhat practical to setup checkpoints to restrict produce / live plants coming in from Arizona. Obviously mexico is to the south but that already has its own set of border checkpoints.
Anyhow, rant over. If anyone is reading this and on the fence about gelato I’d absolutely give her a go. Of the three mentioned 41 was the one I wasn’t 100% fond of.
