Anybody grow trees…bonsai trees that is

Hey OG just curious if anyone does bonsai tree growing? I’ve been interested in the art for along time but I’m ADD as fuck :joy: so I’ve never gave it a go. Well this morning I got on Amazon for something else and there it was on the homepage on sale a 10 species starter kit. I said to myself what the hell and ordered it. Would be super cool to see what you guys/gals that have been at it have going on :call_me_hand:

Edit: these are the species that comes in the kit

Sadly my Dwarf Pomegranate passed away after 25 years of keeping me company.

That sucks @Pigeonman sorry to hear, holy shit 25yrs is along time! So you been at it for awhile then

Nice @Pawsfodocaws how long you been at it?

Have either of you guys started from seed? I know it’s a longer journey but I feel like it’ll be way more satisfying and rewarding.

Ive been at it for 5 years. The two in the bonsai lake pot were plucked from a stump. They were in pots for 3 years and this pond now for 2. Never started from seed. But have plans to as i have seed and bonsai medium. The others were gifted to me 2 years ago. Besides the tipped elm. I plucked that from a stump about a year ago.

I have killed a tun of Container garden and bonsai over the years.
I have some gnarly Virginia creepers roots that i keep in small pots.

Now adays I mainly torture trees in the ground or big containers.

I need to take my yearly photos of these ladies but there are some good shots in here.

I have a red maple that may or may not have made it thru the winter, we shall see soon lol

you can always do the the scratch test with your fingernail. Red maples are easy to tell acer palmatum might be a lil harder.

I got a similar kit from Amazon and couldn’t get any of the seeds to sprout.

Try air layering on a branch, I think that’s what it’s called…

That sucks to hear, the kit I ordered had really good reviews so hopefully I’ll be able to get something to sprout. One of the reviews said there’s 20 seeds per pack so :crossed_fingers: something germs from 200 seeds lol it’s suppose to be here tomorrow so going to get started as soon as it’s shows up.

Awesome keep us posted! I was looking forward to them sprouting.

Will do, if there’s really that many seeds and they have good germ rates I’d be happy to send you a couple seeds @Kushking902 if you’d like.

Is this a Yew or is this the Western Elm @Pawsfodocaws ?

I love small trees and became obsessed with Bonsai since watching Karate Kid 3 as a little shit.

Developed my skills through trial and error digging up seedlings from ravines. Those trees I planted back in the same ravines when I moved out of my parents out of respect and they weren’t very good so I didn’t want to lug them around.

Our winters are second reason I got good at small trees. Easier to over winter for sure.

So far no. Either cuttings, seedlings or dug up established plants of small size.

My prized is my Dawn Redwood, which was grown from seed but not by me.

On Facebook I was on a Bonsai group seeing if anyone had access to Dawn Redwood seeds. A guy messaged me that he started a tray of 250 seeds using liquid smoke to activate them (Redwoods need a fire to wake-up). Of the 250 overwintered to sprout only 14 grew. On the forum we met not one other person was interested in Dawn Redwoods so my post caught his eye.

During the conversation, turns out we don’t just live in the same city but the same NEIGHBOURHOOD! Freaked both of us out but he said that this must have been “meant to be”. So he then said that he’s close to taking his selects and when he did he messaged me to come over and pick one of the ones left to start my journey.

I was blown away. He’s since moved being priced out of the city but he still had his mobile grove… which is also what I call my potted tree collection.

Two most recent look like shit right now but will perk up: Eucalyptus and Silver Dollar Eucalyptus.

My tastiest which was Bonsai wanted to get bigger so I let it… Bay Lauriel.

I also have several citrus trees but they are not small. The only one that is bonsai is my “Australian Finger Lime” which is making my heart sing right now shooting out a bunch of new growth this week as my upstairs plant room hit 28c with the outside beign 14c so it got excited.
