I start my seeds in the same mix I veg and flower in, same mix all the way through from start to finish, but I make my own soil, no bagged stuff. I would definitely not start seeds/seedlings in Fox Farm soil. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t use it at all, ever.
Buying kelp meal would definitely be the most uncomplicated way, but would it be the funnest? Haha. If you’ve got easy access to fresh kelp, you may as well try it. If you wanna use it in a tea (your kelp or store-bought kelp), all you have to do is soak a quarter-cup of it in five-gallons of clean water for 24-48 hours and you’re good. Just be sure to stir it every now and then.
It’s been my experience that grow store employees are possibly the dumbest people in the Grow World. I wouldn’t listen to a thing they say.
I can agree on that one- this grow store guys was an older hippie type- i think he was just trying to make the process easy for a first timer.
I’d like to get to the point of mixing my own soil/medium as well, just not ready for that quite yet. I don’t think my mind can handle another set of variables like that right now I figure Fox Farms will probably do a better job than me at this point… if it ends up being shitty soil, well, then, trial and error as per usual- wont use it again. gotta weight the options.
I mean yeah he asked some questions- what’s nutrients are you running, etc. And I basically told him what I said above- With all the lights and hvac to get under control- I just sorta want the soil to do the work for me for the most part for this grow- so he suggest ed FFOF
Unless you’re using ginormous pots, I found that FFOF is only good for like 4-6 weeks at best before you need to start adding amendments or bottled nutrients. I had issues running pure FFOF on auto’s, much less photo’s you’d generally veg out for awhile. I’d really recommend no one ever uses any foxfarm products, but that’s just my opinion
