One suggestion,
I’d save the FFJ for the flowering/ripening plants. Mix you up a FPJ with some weeds or comfrey or clover. Anything fast/vigorously growing green. This is better for the vegging plants.
Ideally you want 3 fpj’s. A veg, a crossover and a ripening
10-4, I will use my Canna Leaves one and go grab some of the random weed plants in my yard.
So really, we kind of just need one or two jars of FFJ for our plants then? Don’t need to have a bunch of different types vs the more versatile FPJ it seems.
Yeah I usually have only one of each on hand at a time. Right now I have a spring weed mix for veg, a flowering cover crop for crossover and a over ripe banana for ripening.
Almost out of the banana so I have some blueberry cooking. Excited about that one. Need to do an update here on that
Yes please on the blueberries. I bet that would give off a bunch of juice!
I actually have a couple over ripe bananas I was going to chop up and ferment. I will use those for the ripening then.
Do you ever just treat any of the concoctions as a Mother Liquor? Basically add back juices of the same type to the old stock to replenish it, or do you reset everytime?
Hmm interesting. Never really thought of it. I don’t see why it would hurt. They loose potency after 6months to a year so you could “re-charge” it perhaps.
I’ll have to look into this a bit.
But to answer your question, I have up until now just used fresh FPJ/ffj’s
Okay, yeah, I was thinking of like the soup starters or whatever that the have in the giant Woks over in Asian countries. I saw a video where they had a soup that had been going for a couple of centuries or something lol.
Actually, kind of similar in a way to how cast iron is used as well. I went to a fish fry at a guys house and he had he great great great great grandmother’s cast iron from the Revolutionary War Era, pretty cool to think about all the flavors baked in
The canna FPJ I made barely yielded anything lol. Enough for a good spray tonight, but that’s about it. Maybe due to the moisture or lack thereof in the leaves?
My LABs was weird, the cheese layer was in the middle? Smells sweet, almost slighty sour cheesy note to it. I hope it didn’t turn bad, but it looks pretty okay and doesn’t smell offensive at all, just different.
and I got over 200 ml back from it, so that will last me awhile.
I’m waiting for another couple days for the IMO to collect the liquid.
Going to make some wild pear and over-ripe banana FFJ tonight and then will probably add it back to the mother liquor jar, unless you have read anything different?
I haven’t yet. I say go for it and see what happens.
LABS looks good, it does that sometimes. Sounds like your good to go there!
Yeah, the Cana fpj’s don’t really produce much but what does come out is liquid gold!
Good vibes!!
So a little update around here…
Strained the FAA and damn, it smells amazing! If you have ever had a caramelized miso black cod. This smells like that tastes
Making some blueberry FFJ from my buddies farm. Super excited for this. Superfood and all.
Already strained one batch and those remains are making FruitVinegar right now.
Also got my WCP done but for some reason I completely forgot to document that(HighGuy). I think I should redu it anyway as the bones were pretty heavy in the marrow and I think too much of the residual grease made it in the solution. I think next time I will chat the bones and then dry them outside for a few days before crushing.
Hope y’all have a great day!!
Morning Fam!
I’m excited! Got a hookup for fish parts
On my way to pick up another 30-40 lbs today.
Going to go on a hunt for some mill run while I’m out so I can get my IMO3 cookin
Hope y’all have a great Saturday!!
Good vibes!
Got the IMO3 pile cookin yesterday. Happy to report we are picture perfect this morning. I was a little concerned as I could only find straight up rice bran and it’s super fine.
But I added about 8lbs of wood chips, a bucket of hardwood sawdust I had, and some of my leaf litter/mold and a tiny bit of rice halls I had laying around.
Ended up around a 50lb pile. Mixed with just shy of 5gallons of solution.
Turned it for the first time and spread just a tad thinner in hopes I don’t have to turn it too much. I’d love for it to ride at 116 for 4 days all by itself but we’ll see
Have yourselves a great Monday y’all!
Hey, I’ve got a new LABS experience to share: I bought a pair of minimalist shoes that the manufacturer recommends wearing barefoot; now I have got some stiiiinky feet, and it’s been averaging 110 here in AZ. So I wear the shoes for a week with no socks, and as expected, they reek. I put 1 ml of LABS in a spray bottle with about 8 Oz of water and hosed them down, let them dry, and sprayed them again. This evening, I bravely stuck my nose in my shoes and SURPRISE they literally have the “new shoe” smell again. AMAZING!
I got the idea after reading the KNF book and noting that it can be used to deodorize livestock pens.
The IMO3 pile is getting some nice action…
Ha! That’s great @HeadyBearAdventures , I’ve been testing the effects on the feet as well with this pile. Been soaking the dogs every morning for about 20-30 minutes.
Yesterday I cut my toenails( I know, gross) and they didn’t snap like glass and fly across the room anymore
Good lookin’ beard there bud!
I got some flak on the other page for using blueberry FPJ, but the reason that I started using it was because blueberries are a low Ph plant, which means that they absorb Mn better(which is what I was after). It’s so hard to find a Mn input…
Great idea, hadn’t even thought about using it in this way. Thanks for sharing!
what flack did you get for blueberry fpj?
I was talking about the flavor and purple pigment translating to the plant. It wasn’t exactly what got me into this, but I was hoping that it would be a good side effect? Really, what got me into blueberry FPJ is that low Ph plants absorb micronutrients a lot more because they are more available at lower Ph. I’ve been dealing with low Mn for a long time and I came across an article that talking about Mn toxicity in acid loving plants. I just felt that it met a need that I was missing.
Ahhh yeah, I wouldn’t say you got flack really. A simple question really that I think a lot of people have.
The smartest people will tell you we don’t know why a lot of this stuff works , it just does and doesn’t require our human understanding of it. So I’m sure there is more we don’t even know we don’t know.
I’m loving my BB FFJ
My comments on ferments was more about the “bottle model” industry. Yes it’s organic and yes it’s great, but why sell water… it’s the same as they did with salts just now it’s organic.
It’s very cool that you know a farm where you can pick your own berries! That’s what I’m jealous of lol… I was getting expired produce by the trailer load, but that has slowed down. I had a bad exp with a trailer in the past and now I have trailer PTSD. It was an accident that almost pushed me off of a Kentucky mountain and I don’t think that I ever really got over it. I have anxiety anytime a trailer is involved, so picking up produce has been hard for me to do. It’s about a 60mi round trip and I would probably feel better about it if I had a tool box and a spare on the trailer…
