I researched the best dehumidifier for basement use to find the perfect one that keeps the space dry and fresh year round. After reading expert reviews from reputable sources like the new york times, rtings and consumer reports, two models consistently stand out as top recommendations:
The Frigidaire model covers up to 4 500 square feet and includes a 1.7 gallon water bucket, continuous drain option and excellent moisture removal capabilities. It seems like a strong choice for large or consistently damp basements.
On the other hand, the Midea cube is more compact, handling up to 1 500 square feet and features smart control, alexa compatibility and a drain hose. It is also energy star certified which is a big plus for long term energy savings. The modular design looks very convenient and space efficient.
My basement is moderately sized and tends to feel humid, especially in the summer. I care about reliable performance, quiet operation, and minimal maintenance.
However,I am having trouble deciding which one would best suit my needs. So which one would you recommend, the Frigidaire 50 Pint or the Midea Cube 20 Pint? Any advice or personal experience would be appreciated.
Personally I’d go with the 50 pint after looking at those options, I live in FL and my dehumidifier is a necessity, almost as crucial as my light and fans.
Overkill is better than under in my experience, good to have the extra power just in case.
Best of luck and let us know how it all works out!
I have 2 50 point dehumidifiers running constantly during the summer, to keep humidity inline. Buy the big one. Why would you ever need Alexa on a dehumidifier? The small one is underpowered.
Edit - you can buy an accessory drain hose for the other dehumidifier and run it into a floor drain for continuous use. I literally bought one yesterday at the hardware store for less than $10.
I have the frigidair. Nice unit, my favorite out of the ones that ive had before. Doesnt run as hot as other units ive used.
My basement sits at 70-90% humidity if its not running 24/7. Usually fills up once a day, been meaning to hook it up to a condensate pump and send to the drain. Id never go smaller without a condensate pump or hooking it up to a drain
I have the first one. I elevate it and run a tube to a 5 gallon bucket. It runs 24 7 in the summer and sometimes in the winter, and its going on its third year.
Edit Only issue ive had was operator error, if the optional hose isnt secure, it WILL drip into the tray and overflow.
Seems $$$ for what youre trying to accomplish. I feel like this is something youd use if humidity was quite extreme. A speed controlled exhaust fan might actually get
You where you want to be for considerably less.
Get the Frigidaire . It works & will last . Like @Weednerd.Anthony I too am in Florida . Have 2 of those 50pt Frigidaires . 2nd pretty much a backup . 100% necessary around here if you wanna grow anything other than extreme equatorial sativas .
I have the Media in my grow room and it works great. Never used the smart contol. Cant say how it would do in a basement as my grow room is a bedroom. I cant see the prices as the links keep taking me to the Canadian site. When I purchased it the cost was $193 in July of 2023. Its now listed for $418. Thats a crazy price increase. If it were me I would go for the bigger unit. When it comes to power its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it IMO.
Grab a newer portable Air conditioner with dehumidifier/humidifier function and never look back. Can use to cool, humidify, and dehumidify and if you get a ductless model than bonus.
Sometimes not but it’s a wet year so yea even though it’s capped comb it fluctuates with the environment to say up in the 20% moisture range and it needs to stay under 18% level ideally.
You would never have to worry as a beek out your way, heck I bet it won’t hardly pour. Lol
Both of the dehumidifiers you mentioned are solid picks and I actually looked into the same two when I was shopping for mine a few years ago. That said, I have been using the Frigidaire 50 Pint Dehumidifier in my basement for a while now and I can confidently say it has been absolutely worth it.
It handles large spaces like a champ up to 4,500 sq. ft. and I really like that it comes with:
Custom humidity control
A washable filter that helps clean the air
A 1.7-gallon bucket with a front-loading design
Continuous drain option super handy, I never have to worry about emptying it manually
And it is surprisingly quiet which was a must for me.
Here is the one I use:
The Midea Cube is also a neat option especially if you are short on space or want something a bit more modern and tech friendly like Alexa support, modular design, etc… Great for smaller areas.
But based on my experience and your needs , I do recommend going with the Frigidaire, it is just super reliable and has held up great over time.
