Will repeatedly topping a bonsai mom have negative impact on the plant if you eventually plan to flower it?
I’ve seen @JohnnyPotseed say he abuses his moms for years then flowers it one last time before they are finished so I don’t see why you couldnt do it just fine with a bonsai also
Step 1: Know the basics of cannabis vegitation care.
Step 2: Develop severe OCD.
Step 3: Trim/Defoliate 1x every 1-2 months depending on growth.
Step 4: Root trim every 3-6 months depending on growth.
Step 5: Use preventative insect “stuffs” using the better safe than sorry principle 1-4x a month.
Step 6: Be mindful of how far you can push a plant. I like to take cuts of all my moms at least 1x a year and grow them out in case it’s obvious I should retire the mom.
When this happens the new cut is the new mom and I honour the old mom by flowering her out (bud/hash run) or letting her finally fuck (seed run).
Another good thing to note is that the smaller the pot the more you really need to develop step #2 as you have a buffer with larger pots… but the offset is bigger moms.
Currently I have 30x moms in 2L pots so they are all in 1x 2x4 tent with a PVC shelf at 15x plants a level. These need 22oz of solution or water every 2-3 days depending on season and how much green is on them.
I got potential for “a lotta problems” running all this but good genetics fast is never one of them these.

Goals! Thanks for the breakdown Pigeon!
Only planning 6 so hopefully i can i can do a bit more yolo and a bit less ocd.
Planning 1/2 gallon bags also. Cant seem to find 2l ones around here for some reason.
Yeah, I think the root trimming is something people don’t consider. “As above, so below”.
@Pigeonman with your root pruning do you just trim off about 1/2" from around the entire root ball? Aside from if theres a large drinking root? I ask as I have 2 moms that are hitting 6 mth in the same pots and have just started to show some yellowing for the 1st time
I cut off all the roots but leaving a 2-3" wide plug. I also trim off about 1-2 inches of the bottom.
It does feel really weird doing it as it’s the last thing your brain accepts doing to a plant you’ve been caring after for so long but they bounce back pretty fast so long as you’re following:
Don’t expect much to happen above ground for a week or two as it panics and spends it’s energy establishing below ground. Also be wary of over watering as you may autopilot to what you were doing BEFORE you cut off most of it’s roots.

Best of success @Fortman420 !
I’ve had the mom’s just living the sipping life so I will help them out and just ignore them gently. I’ll also watch a few videos to assist in my comfort with this step.

I think the @Pigeonman tutorial is all you need. But I’ll drop this link, in case ya like to read. ![]()
Hehe. Basically the same thing that LJ posted.
Hey guys! What about nutrition? I’ve heard that good rooting clones come from low nitrogen diet mother. Any ideas about nutrients elements ratio?
Moms in beer cups fed 1 a day or 2 less then 6 in tall with 10 or so mini tops. Grab the tops in a hand full and cut with scissors ever couple weeks. Low feed, low lights. Done this from tropical sativas to afghanis. All done fine no stress from root bound. Only one I had issues with was Lebanese but I didn’t wanna put it on a 24hr light schedule for just that one.
This is the lazy way of course. ![]()

I snip cuttings, soak them in some rooting tonic, prep and poke the cuts, with a bit of clone gel, into your choice of medium.
The 3 day, I empty out all the previous rooting juice.
I add a few drops of my flowering plant food, MorBloom, for me, into a bit of water, and give them each about a shot glass.
The flower food seems to blow roots out for me, better than rooting juice alone.
That is my observation anyway.
Hey! Do you know what Npk ratio your flower food is? Thanks!
0-10-10 is on the label.
Nice, good to know! Thank you man!
Sounds like the alaska fish you can get at home depot.
Yes it is. I first found it at the grow shop, and fell in love with it.
They discontinued it, so now, once every other year, I go buy a gallon of it.
What I really like about it, as a non PH adjusting grower, I found after the first quart I bought, a double shot glass, into 8-10 gallons of water, drops PH to perfect levels, with my well water values.
I use the veg when i need a qquik shot of N. A little fishy but Nbd.
