Breeding Project Questions

Hey guys I have a project I’ve been planning for a long time that I’ll finally be putting into action in a few months but I’ve got some breeding questions I’d really like your guys input on. First tho here’s my plan. A very generous member here is hooking me up with some Old World Paki bred by a member here that’s described as being some cheesy stanky stank. It’s a cross of Pakistani heirloom strains by Bodhi and Tom Hill. I also have some Dj Short Blueberry f5s. I know it won’t be exact but I’m trying to recreate a Blueberry SuperSkunk or a blue cheese and I figure this could probably get me pretty close. Now for the questions. First one is what are the main traits to look for in males that you want to pass to the offspring? I’ve never actually grown males out so I’m clueless with a lot of stuff for them. Second is does anyone know which terps are more dominant in which sex? Like say I kept the old world paki as the mom and she was really cheesy smelling and I pollinated her with the most blueberry smelling dads pollen would there be a higher percentage of the dad or mom terps in the offspring? Or is there really no way of knowing that part

I’d say you are thinking too much for this stage in the game. Take good looking male match with good looking female and go from there.

Male traits for me is best guess based mostly on health structure and vigour.

I would suggest doing a form of open pollination. 5 or 6 strong healthy plants of both strains, m/f and let them all cross pollinate.

The real selection work begins after you grow out a few dozen F1 seeds. You cant really predict how the cross will turn out, you just have to get it going and test the progeny.

I get that 100% but I’d really like to know as much as I can about something before I jump into trying it. Some of you guys here on OG have more experience breeding then I have years alive. Currently going through trial and error learning coco and I’d really rather not do that with genetics lol I have a somewhat ok understanding of how dominant and recessive genes work and how there’s tons of other factors that influence terps but I’d really like to understand it more

I’d argue the opposite. Cross them. Get some F1s you can be proud of.

Then focus on the technical shit.

This is just my .02

That’s partly why I asked about whether mom or dad genes are more dominant because I wanted to know where I should start with the project as a whole. I have limited space so it’s gonna be a really drawn out process. Like say i was really hoping for the blueberry to be the more dominant terp I wasn’t sure if I should be aiming for the blueberry keeper to be a mom or dad or if thats not even a factor

Can I also use the fact that I’m a weed nerd as an excuse on why I wanna know? Lol but no I get what your saying 100% because I see you guys say KISS all the time and I know adding more fuel to the fire can over complicate things

If you want to be more reserved and play it safe, first make a few hundred seeds of both strains. That will act as your safety net.

The best way to learn, is by doing. Literature/information will only get you so far. Experience is far more important. Experiment and dont worry about the “mistakes” that you make. Errors are more valuable than perfection, in this respect.

If you want to know what traits are recessive and dominant, I suggest you grow out a dozen plants of each strain. If you grow 20 plants of the Paki, you will notice slow growing plants with uncommon recessive traits. Whatever traits appear the most frequently, within that batch of plants, are the dominant traits. You would have to do the same for the blueberry strain.
Once you know both strains a little more intimately, you can do a controlled cross pollination. Select a paki that clearly has recessive traits, a blueberry male that has vigor and many dominant traits, and the progeny will most likely come out Blueberry dominant. Thats a quick explanation of a simple approach that will help you achieve your goal.

I agree. Also want to say I’m not a perfectionist and I don’t expect the best of the best for my first result I just like to learn lol but anyway this was what my gameplay was gonna be. Pop a pack, separate the males and females, either take clones or reveg whatever I pick as a keeper. Then repeat but with the other strain and gear it more towards wanting males. I just didn’t know much about what I asked in this post so far and anything at all about pollen storage

Thank you for taking your time to explain some stuff to me because I’m truely clueless about the breeding aspect. You guys are awesome here

I personally dont store pollen for more than 3-4 weeks. I collect it and keep it in a black film canister. I store the film canister somewhere dry and cool, like in a cupboard.

Some growers will freeze it, for long term storage. I dont have any experience with that.

I would simply keep a clone of the father, if I know that I will be breeding with that plant.

Dry dry dry , humidity is its great death  i made a drying chamber out of a 5gal bucket with a lid and some silica beads i keep them separated with solo cups i will know just how good it works this season im cracking the chamber first time in 2+ years

At what point in the grow cycle is best to clone a male?

I’ll have to try to remember to ask you how well your method worked lol

Dont worry my friend i will most definitely post my findings

I will take cuts before I flower a plant. That way I dont waste time or resources on a clone of a plant that I dont like.

You’re preaching to a vast choir of weed nerds. Where did you think you were?!?!

Lol my point exactly

One last question and I promise I’ll leave you alone lol say you’re only pollinating one branch. Would you want to use more pollen for more seeds or is that a random factor also?
