Breeding question

I am working on reverseing a clone of my Limon Blanco V3, and I plan to hit another clone with the pollen. Am I right in thinking that all of the seeds should be an exact copy of the mother plant or is there still a chance for phenotype varation? I am fairly sure that the mother plant comes from a well worked and stablized line and should be nearly identical plants from seed to seed. Do I have this right in my head or is my thinking off on this?

Howdy @Ace71975, if the cutting you’re reversing comes from a worked and stabilized IBL it should breed fairly true but I wouldn’t say it will give exact copies of the mother in all resulting seeds. I would expect nuanced variability, how much depends on how stable or inbred traits in that work is. Perhaps some recessive traits as well. Sounds like a great project. Homozygous traits will be preserved in the progeny. Heterozygous traits will have variations in the progeny.

The consistency in the outcome of the selfing depends on which traits are locked in as homozygous in the mother. You should find very similar phenos in the progeny, the frequency of which will depend on this.

Like @Sbeanonnamellow says above, if it’s from a true IBL, then very similar phenos should have high frequency in the progeny.

Its a cross between two IBL’s. Terra White IBL and Afgan Lemon IBL, This is what there website says about it: The Limon Blanco V3 is a True F1 hybrid producing incredibly lemony aromas. Resulting from a cross between an American Hybrid and a pure Landrace strain from northern Afghanistan.
Both parents are citrusy with the Terra White producing sweet lemon kushy terpenes and the Afghan Lemon reeking of zingy lemon and lime.
This New School/Old School cross is the perfect combination between a potent and frosty modern hybrid and a pungent ancestral hash plant.
The Terra White, developed by the famous TerraGrow shop, has won countless Spanish cups in the extraction category.
On the other hand, the Afghan Lemon comes from a cultivar that has been used for making exceptional hashish for thousands of years.
The Limon Blanco V3 is therefore a dream come true for most extraction lovers.

Since they F1 both lines, the V3 should be all over the place but in a good way
Once they bred both of their true breed lines together, they created a new line, a mixup if you will of known traits
How they will mix together only the progeny will tell, if your chosen clone is within the selection in prior generations (both P1 known traits) you can expect a higher consistency in the S1
It’s a hard question as you dwell in F1 line, but I think the odds will be in your favor.

The mom has the most amazing bright citrus stem rub. She literally smells better than anything I have grown or smoked thus far, So i hope the seeds are close(if the reversal works that is).

True f1 will express 25% like mom 25% like dad and 50% mix match i hope that helps best way is to do it and find out other wise its just math on a paper :slight_smile:

@drgreensleeves is absolutely right. You can expect approximately those ratios when hybridizing two IBLs together. It’s almost impossible to have exact replications from seed. Only clones will give you those results

So to join in here. If the OP makes his seed and grows them out. Would the next step be to select plants with the desired traits and make seed from those?

Yes that’s the next logical step in the breeding process. Selecting for desirable traits and crossing together

When you find the ultimate plant for you and you want to create a clone like seed stock from it you Self it for as many generations it takes (choosing each generation the best mother like plant from that batch) until the seeds in the following generations aligns with your starting plant, to about 75+% from the final Self generation.

When your plant has 2/3 traits or 1/3 and you wanna add to it, you cross it to a plant that hold that trait.

I guess what i dont understand is this: If I take a number of clones of a mother, I reverse one clone and use that pollen on the other clones, how can the seeds be different?

Logically in my brain it would seem if im forceing one clone to be come male, that is 100% the same dna of the mom, and then I am hitting another clone with that pollen which also has 100% the same dna as the mother plant, how can I get Varation there?

Admittedly I know little about genetics, only what was covered in basic high school biology, and that was 33 years ago, so my memory on that isnt great. Never took any Genetics in college(went computers) so my knowldge here is limited at best, if you could explain it like you would to a 10 year old. Remember im Old and my brain dont fire on all cylienders anymore lol

Because there is still some genetic variation. Some plants may express genes others don’t, but are in the genetic material. But I think they should still be somewhat close. I will find out soon enough!

There will be variations within the genetic material your working with.
In this case your gene pool is more tight and bred for certain traits
The F1 will show those traits like others have said somewhat pure and somewhat mixed, you just know they will pass their traits to most offsprings which is what’s important when makin seeds
When taking into account your example, they won’t be different from one another anyway.
A clone reversed to hit fellow clones will give same seed batches with same variations.

Your S1 is from F1 so no way of telling if it will be true to the mother clone (again, true in the sense of how much seeds will be mother like, how much will be 50% mother like, and so on) and not in the sense if some seeds actually carry your selection which I believe most of them will share a lot of traits that have been bred in the first place.

I guess what confused me, was maybe the term Clone, for example, when they cloned Dolly the sheep, she was an exact copy of the sheep they got the genetic material from. If a scientist were to take my genetic material and clone me, it would be an exact copy of me, at least physically, now personality could be totally differnt depending on how the clone was raised, but genetically would be Identical. Clone to me, as always meant a 100% exact Copy of the starting genetic material.

Have you saw the movie The Island? That is what I think of when I think a clone. But thank you for explaining it, makes sense at least somewhat now lol

That’s why I said if you take a clone, reverse it and pollinate other clones you took from it, the seeds will be the same in terms of genetic material and the variations between them, no difference.
Grow 100 seeds from clone A and grow 100 from clone B, probably you won’t see deviation between them that much, and if you do grow another 100 and it will balance so you can just gather all the seeds from the clones into one batch yes.

GOTCHA now I think i get where i was getting confused. So if the seed i started with could smell like general citrius, Lemon or lime and I clone that mother, reverse one and pollanate the others, I will get the same 3 possiblities in the seeds right?

Yeah just consider them all same.
As long it’s the same clone, the seeds will be the same no matter if it’s clone #4 or clone #11 :wink:

Awesome thank you now it makes sense, so I can still get different phenotypes but they will be limited to the phenotype possiblities that the original starting seed had. One last question since this is the first time i have ever grown a photo period, how long after flipping to 12/12 before i start seeing signs of sex? I am using the injection method of reversal that i found here on the forum, but no idea when to start paying close attention to see if the reversal took or not.

A plant will show sex in about two or three weeks after the switch to 12/12. A clone is almost always going to be the same but if you self a clone you’re opening up all the genetic material from the previous generations. Mixing them up and putting it back together again. So there’s going to be a certain amount of diversity in the offspring even though you’re only breeding with one plant. Hope that clears up some confusion
