Breeding run on 1st grow

Morning all, I’ll preface this with the fact that I have no idea what I’m doing, but it’s fun. When I started growing this summer, I landed some claimed Northern Lights seeds without any way to authenticate them. I ended up germinating 10 hoping that one was a decent female. Well I ended up with 3 solid plants, 2 females. The male was the fastest growing, and one female was extremely tall. Long story short, I put the tall female outside in a field and introduced the male about 2 weeks later. Fast forward 3 months… open-pollination seeds. I had no idea it would make this many. I’d love to share to those interested but not sure on the proper way to go about that.

Correct me if wrong, these are now F2 seeds?

Congrats and respect for diving in head first on your first run.

Yeah, you could call them an F2.

The good kind of “happy accident”.

Cool. I’m guessing for it to be a true F2, I’d need to have confirmation that both seeds were from the same parents. This also may seem like time invested is a lost cause here, but these are easily the best overall plants I’ve grown.

Unlike myself according to my mother lmao.

Do you have pics of the plants with buds?

That male looks pretty sweet. Big bush and then stretchy!

Indeed. This is the other girl, who stayed inside for the flip (on the left).

This usually refers to flowering multiple males with one or more females, not necessarily of the same strain. It’s a technique to capture more genetic information than pairing would.
It sounds like you mated two plants. Good on you! If the parents bred true for the traits you desire then your seeds likely will as well.

Saying F2 here is common but somewhat confusing. I wish there was a term for “F2 on MY watch.” I have Tom Hill’s Deep Chunk (F12 or thereabouts) which were further selected before I got them. I paired them as well, open pollination of two DC males and a DC female. To call my seeds F2s (and expect F2 variety) would be silly but we don’t have better terminology.

I appreciate the clarification! I suppose I did mate them rather than open pollinate, good to know. I agree about the bio- terminology too and I like your suggestion. I’ve seen the S1/S2 designation on some seeds. What is that in reference to?

S(n) means selfed. Cannabis has the super power of reproducing in the absence of males. Intersex (aka herming) expression can be forced via Rodelization, the stressing with long flowering or the application of chemicals like Silver Thiosulphate or Colloidal Silver. A female plant can be induced to pollinate itself. The offspring of such “reversed” sex plants are feminized seeds. In many cases this contributes to increased sexual instability down the line.

Got any pics of the harvested flower?

Excellent description. I’ve done some reading on the Colloidal Silver method, super interesting.

These are the only two pics I have of the harvested seed-run plant. Last photo is the girl that remained indoors, as I didn’t flower her when placing the other two outside.
