Broseidon's Corner

This be Broseidon’s Corner now (Claimed!).

There are many like it but this one’s mine

As I wrote in the intro section, I’m an old head.
First grow was early 2000s AK47 and NL#5 from Nirvana. We managed to flower 5 or 6 plants in the end. Was the best and most distinctly different smoke between two strains my young self ever experienced back then. Still miss the AK47. We grew in promix with atami nutes back then.

About 10 years ago I was able to start back up and decided to go with organic growing. I also researched strains and breeders heavily as I wanted to try my hand at selecting mothers and fathers and eventually do some crosses myself.

My equipment back then was a large veg chamber (with a 400w MH as the main light and a rack for clones and seedlings with T5 armatures ), 1 small (315w cmh 4200k spectrum) and one large (630w CMH 3100k spectrum) flowering chamber and a drying chamber (with clotheslines and fan/filter for initial hang dry).

I used regular jiffy plugs and solo cups (and later a DIY aero cloner) for seedlings/clones and regular plastic pots for veg. Then transplanted into 3.5 gallon fabric pots (later 2 large fabric pot beds, round) for flowering.

I ran LC’s/Coots soil mix from ICmag as far as I was able to (cant get all the ingredients here in EU to this day) and ran mostly (but not only) Mr Nice gear during my successful runs. Had some great results, found some keepers, but also ran into many kinds of issues (yay organic soil) not least of which were the dreaded gnats…

Anyway, I can still be found on both boards. Went by BigBadBiddy on ICmag (there some pictures survived) and same as here, Broseidon, over on Mr Nice forum (they migrated forums or sth, no pics left alive as far as I can tell).
Been a tester for Shantibaba before as well, during his attempt to release a new version of the G13. Don’t know if any of you were along during that time but Mr Nice supposedly used to have a real clone of the infamous G13 way back when. To this day you can get G13 crosses (G13xSkunk, G13xNl, G13xHz) at MrNice and there is definitely something to these lines (I grew 2 of em). Whether or not the “real” G13, no clue, wasnt around back then, never have nor will have access to the “real clone” if it ever existed. But G13xSkunk and G13xNL were especially, noticeably different to other Skunk and Nl I had grown from both Mr Nice and other sources before. A G13xSkunk was actually my selected father for my first seed run as I had never stumbled across such a healthy/vigorous male with such an extremely pungent and super pleasant smell on the stem rub during early veg, getting more and more potent as veg went on. I never flowered that “stud” but kept him around for a few years before I had to shut it all down.

Anyway, around that time (2017/2018) or when it was, Shanti hunted down a legit seeming source for the original G13 (I think he never gave up or will get up tryna find that one). He bought cuts or whatever, crossed to various lines of his own and sent out testers among the community. Back then I was hitting my stride and got some.
Mine were duds, if they grew, they were crappy, didnt manage to flower a single one. My environment was dealing with various issues at that time as well though and I chalked it up to my bad environment.
I remember reading others having issues as well though, if they went to flower, it wasnt worth it and now years later, it seems like nothing came of that attempt, probably a bad source in the end.

Damn, getting all side tracked.

So what’s Broseidon’s corner aside from a place for me rambling about the good ol’ days and my perspective on this here thang of ours…

Well a project is in the making.

My current equipment/setup:

  • Veg Tent 100x100x180cm (sorry, don’t speak imperialo, don’t know how many elbows or eyebrowlashes or whatever that is <3 ) With a 315w cmh 4200k spectrum. I have a 400w MH in 4200k spectrum as well and two 4xT5 armatures I could use for early veg. I plan to run ez plugs for seedlings, aero cloner for clones and regular medium plastic pots with organic soil for veglings.
  • Flower Tent 120x120x220cm with a 630w CMH and I plan to put a p600 100w ViparSpectra LED in each corner of the tent for vertical lighting and complementing the CMH’s spectrum. I large, round fabric pot for the whole tent, forgot how many litres or gas cannisters or whatever.
  • Dry tent 80x80x160cm just a fan and carbon filter and probably some clothesline or sth, gonna figure out later how to hang stuff in there efficiently.
  • eventually I believe I will need another small tent for parents or if I ever want to chuck some pollen and make seeds after all

The medium will be my 10 year old soil that has been sitting on a terrace in my backyard without getting watered for the last 5 or so.
I don’t know if I ever got the nutrient mixture in the soil right in the end or not. I had very successful runs but also runs where a lot went wrong. I remember often having to battle yellowing leaf tips from the bottom of the plants upwards (N deficiency?) in early to mid flower already. No amount of worm castings or worm casting ACTs helped though…

From what I understand it should be completely inert at the moment.

I plan to ammend it with some goodies like bat guano (for the flowering bed), fresh worm castings for everyone and then I got some terra preta and plant coal on the way. I do have a bunch of perlite and malted barley left from back then as well.

Anyway, plan to extract the soil from the old fabric beds and into plastic bins. I probably will end up borrowing a cement mixer for the whole ordeal. Otherwise I can recommend these “handmixer” looking things from the DIY store to mix cement and the like in small amounts for mixing soil, helps a ton.
Anyway, add some of the new goodies, mix them bad boys up real good, in the meantime brew a lovely big helping of ACT with melasses, shredded malted barley, worm castings and maybe a helping of some bat guano.
Put the flowering bed in the tent and fill it back up, probably leave the soil for veg tent in the tubs and then give both a generous watering with the act. Get some aeration going, cover up the soil and let it cook for a week or two.

In the meantime, get some seeds going.

Which seeds should I pop?
First question to anyone actually reading that far along.
The seeds I actually would like to grow:

  • MrNice SSH (have about 20)
  • MrNice Mango Haze (about 30)
  • MrNice Neville’s Haze (about 30)
  • Karma Genetics Headbanger (12)
  • Ace Seeds Malawi (breeders pack, 40 or sth remaining)

However I want to get things going first and somewhat dialed in. Besides, I have a plant limit. I might be able to pop 20 seeds but due to plant limit and also the size of my flowering tent, 12 will be the max I can flower at any given time.

So what I will likely pop first is:

  • MrNice Master Kush x Skunk
  • MrNice ASH
  • MrNice Shit
  • MrNice LaNina
  • MrNice Spice (although that one is in the freezer, gotta check if they survived)

The Master Kush x Skunk is a likely candidate as I grew it before. During my last grow with em it had 2 noticeable phenos.
1 grew very indica and had the most disgusting smells in flower that also changed as it went along. Think tar, sewage, puke and stuff like that, it was hella weird. After chop and cure it ended up smelling like camphor. Don’t know how many of you know it, it’s quite common in Germany. Didn’t smell like weed or cannabis at all. Would have been great for stealth grows lol It was potent and yealdy enough but nothing special.

Now the other pheno was remarkably stretchy/sativay and foxtailed like crazy. Buds were kinda aery, too and trimming sucked balls.
But the flavor and smell was absolutely divine. It smelled like “ice bonbons” if you know that stuff. It is a very distinct smell, closest in the US stratosphere I can think of is wintergreen altoids but not quite.
Anyway, smell carried over into the cure (after briefly disappearing for a week, scary) and both smell and taste, especially when vaping were sublime. Like those friggin Gletschereis-Bonbons.
I kept it for a bit, lost as well. The high was much more sativa leaning than expected, definitely not the most oomph ever but the taste and smell made that one worth keeping.

So yeah, probably a couple of MKxSk from MrNice for the first round.
I was considering getting some clones for the first round to better dial in the system but am careful about sourcing them. The best available source to me at the moment requires 30 pop a clone and I think that is more “I buy it to make clones from it myself”- than “I buy 12 to dial in my tent”-money.

So seeds it likely is. Maybe I should lean more towards the LaNina or other Sativa stuff I have but havent mentioned yet though, since I actually wanna grow SSH and Neville’s Haze and those Headbanger from Karma for some newschool genetics?

Input welcome

Also input welcome:
At several points during my grows I felt like “if only I could get some G.H. Maxibloom here in EU, I could throw some of that into the ACTs I make and all my nutrient issues would disappear”.
Nowadays Terra Aquatica (or T.A.) is the EU version of G.H. and they have a slightly altered formula product called Drypart Grow and Drypart Flower which are essentially Maxi grow and Maxi bloom from back in the day.

Think I should get some of that just in case?
I currently have nothing in terms of good kelp here. Earth worm castings I need to order, I have some gardening compost but not sure how great it is for our plants, it is bio and local though but there is also a hollander trea nearby/above the compost that I have been battling with spider mites with for 2 years now so I’d rather not use any of that compost pile.
I remember when I last stopped that humic/fulvic acids were considered a solution for my nute issues but I didnt get around to trying any solution before i had to stop.
Other than that, the bat guano is the only new ammendment I wil be testing.

Alright, this is already a wall lol, any feedback welcome, will add whenever there is something new and probably wont upload many pics before plants go into soil which will hopefully be around christmas.

Stay Frosty

Dude ¿!? You must be rich or something? Or sponsored and byist lol whatever im glad you found your way back around  and im a natural farmer so im a cheap bastard  all that really isnt nessicery (at least not for me) when i run in pots i mix alfalfa pellets 30% in soil mix with extra perlite course and extra course and once plants get 1-2 nodes tall hit them with HB and SC nematodes  man i love nematodes and they do much better in tall pots and thats it
Nematodes = 30$
Alfalfa pellets/ horse feed 50 lbs = 20$
Perlite = 10$
The potting medium i buy can be found at Lowes for sure but its just a peat /coco / perlite blend

This is a good source of nematodes i have only gotten a dead pack from them once and it was because i went through a 3rd party trying to get them cheaper smh lol

Howdy @Broseidon, welcome to Overgrow! I’ve been meaning to frequent the MNS forums more feeling like I’ve neglected contributing over there. I remember this screen name of yours. It’s nice to see a familiar member of the community finding their way here at OG.

My initial instinct, and especially since you mention your fondness for it, is to start some of the Neville’s Haze you have. It’s a very good line with unique attributes in the quality of the smokes effect and exotic aromas. Makes great hybrids and is one of the legendary varieties in the cannabis scene. Everything you have from MNS gives a chance at something great, and in my opinion especially the Haze hybrids so SSH, Mango Haze and ASH are what I would pick from next if it were me. A buddy made some ASH F2’s a long time ago in a small 2x2 tent under a compact florescent, just to make seeds and I remember thinking it was such a modest set-up for seeds and didn’t think much of anything good could come from it. Oh how wrong was I! I received maybe 5 of those ASH F2’s and got such an amazing plant from it. It’s still something I think of fondly to this day, and that must have been almost a decade ago now. So I think the ASH is worth exploring, it seems to have a chance at throwing out pretty much anything from the Haze, Skunk, ans Afghan gene pools. Master Kush x Skunk sounds really good too. Of course SSH and Mango Haze are legends in their own. I really don’t think you can go wrong. Looking forward to seeing what you choose and how it goes for you. Hope you’re having a nice day. Many blessings and much love

Well i got something i think is pretty radd if you would grow them i call it "Holy Sassafras " its a 8-12wk super frosty resin monster that has a slightly motivational, intro/ extrospective , pain killing , heavy in the eyes and the more i smoke the more i want to chill and reflect/philosiphy

I sadly wasn’t home for harvest (LEO made sure of that) so grandpa do the best he could which was chop it and put in trash can with lid and there it sat for a year! Smh lol and it still hold those terps! and if you decide to grow it i will reveal pedigree  @Broseidon

Bro… If down to earth ferts would be available at a normal price in EU I would be soooooo happy.
I might even start a new soil from scratch then!
The guy from down to earth was also the one who had the same issue with buckwheat hulls that I had and I only found the culprit due to stumbling over an interview of his after more than a year of tryna find whats wrong with my soil lol (the buckwheat hulls were from a yoga shop, intended for use as yoga pillow fillings and therefore had an anti-bacterial-microbial-fungal coating that ruined the living soil food web haha.

Anyway, I just checked and I could not find a distributor that ships to EU yet. I might just write them an email and see if they can help me directly.

But I have been hunting the DTE crab meal among other things for nearly a decade. A friend of mine almost got put on a terrorist watch list cause he tried to order it for me over his military contacts here in Germany and they thought he was trying to make fertilizer bombs rofl.

Thanks for everyone else’s feedback as well!

I think as it stands I will go for MKS and ASH 50/50 so likely 10-12 seeds each and then select 12 to flower and take it from there.

I am hesitant to pop any Neville’s Haze, SSH and Mango Haze before I have things dialed in and can make sure I can keep a mother or father alive in case I stumble upon something noteworthy. It’s one of my biggest fears, like with the G13xSkunk daddy back then. To find something unique and then have it slip through my fingers cause I can’t keep it alive in my setup. I mean sure, I can always buy more seeds but I spent about 1k on genetics back then after doing lots of research, another 1k for grow equipment. Got enough mileage out of the equipment and now gonna invest another 1k ish for new stuff.

I wouldn’t say I am rich but I grow for myself and want only the best, hence organic. I know that you can go very cheap and simple with organic soil but I try to get the best out of the plants which is why Down to Earth supplements interest me so much as well.

As it stands I will still bet on my old soil mix and just reammend it. Aside from the 1 - 10 - 1 bat guano I will try first time this round I also ordered some blood, bone and fish meal that will hopefully cover any remaining nute deficits if they exist.
Getting some great white shark mycos this time around, used different ones in the past but they don’t sell in the pure form I want anymore either.

Everything is just premixed stuff here in EU …
Even Alfalfa meal, if I want to get it, I would have to shell out nearly 50 bucks for a 6kg pack from some CaliFarm import or whatever, same with kelp. It’s dreadful to get single ingredients in the EU …

Good thing that nematodes were mentioned, almost forgot those, only ordered some BTI for pest control. Nematodes are great gonna get me some as well for this round.

@drgreensleeves Could you elaborate on your holy sassafras? what kind of genetics is that strain, what does it come from?

I think the way things are shaping up I am more and more set to start from seed for now but always interested ofc

/Edit
I just found this website “desertcart.de” where I could order DTE ferts but we are talking 85€ for 5 pounds of crab meal. Anything in larger volumes like 20 pounds etc breaks the 200€ barrier.
So it is somewhat possible but can’t realistically pay for that it seems :frowning:

 Are you going to grow it ?!? dude its pedigree is super solid!
Its a G13SB X oaxacaxpeshi  its got all kinds of hidden treasures in it

Its tempting Doc

But I think I best start round 1 with seeds, select me a keeper or two and then I can offer something in trade.
If starting from clone my idea was 1-4 strains max and 12 clones overall. Get a cut from each strain for next round and then use 12 clones to better dial in my system from round 1.
I think if I grow a strain that not so much is known about, even with 12 clones from the same plant, I wouldn’t know how to dial in my environment.
With the MKS and ASH I at least have some baseline since the MKS I grew before.

@George I tend to lean towards sativa heavy hybrids but there is a time and a place for every strain haha. Sometimes a good indica oomph couchlock is what I need. But I generally prefer the strains that don’t make me tooooo sleepy. I am lazy and sleepy enough as it is

Thats all i use is seed , and i need nothing in return but … " i got shotgun!" On this ride of yours  and theres still plenty of variation in this line i like diversity  but the pheno i like the most is the Sassafras berry from a Sassafras tree its not rootbeer its waaayyyy more intense! With a slight vaper

Damn, root beer and these kind of smells/flavors sound just like my jam

I is smart by the way, checked and already ordered nematodes, coming later this week. Still waiting for the blood bone and fish meal and some dolocal to be shipped as well. Rest of the stuff has been coming in bit by bit. Main hurdle is still the new lights from eastern europe, there was a bit of a hiccup, waiting for an update. But those are for flower, I can start without them for now if necessary.

After work ima go clean out the grow room and create space (too full right now) for the soil to cook and to set up the veg tent. Still need to remove the one ceiling light so I can rotate the flower tent so I can access the flowering plants from 3 sides for the first time in my life, sooo looking forward to that lol.

The molasses should arrive over the day, then I just need the blood bone and fish meal and I can start mixing the soil and brew the ACT.
Might upload some pics then, lets see.

/Edit

My air intake is currently passive, do y’all think I should get 2 additional fans for active air intake for the veg and flower tent? I think passive is fine. The Homebox I use also provides a screen to filter intake.

As long as you got an exhaust fan itll be fine

Yub exhaust and filter is there for each tent including the dry tent. I will also be able to put the exhaust hose into the next room of the basement as the top row of the dividing walls in the basement are left open for general air exchange. So I can exhaust into the next room and the entire basement room proper acts as the lung room.

/Edit
Great White Shark Mycos, Drypart Grow and Drypart Bloom also on the way along with new air ducting to keep things silent and glass wool free (god I hated dealing with that stuff).

Now only the stragglers from the nutes and the new lights from eastern europe and equipment wise I am all ready.

Gonna be fun to set up the Blumat system after all those years sitting in my basement wondering when they gonna get to work, too.
I even have a pump and stuff to pressurize the Bulmat system but in my current room I have a water tap freely available that is normally used for a washing mashine. Gonna just use the Blumat pressure reducer and connect it to that. Hope my organic soil will be enough to deal with the tap water, a Reverse Osmosis thing is one of the few things I don’t have yet…

Cleaned out the room yesterday, rotated the flower tent, gonna set up the veg tent this evening after work and then put the dry tent in its place and see if I have enough room left for a) a little workbench/table and b) an eventuall small mommy/daddy tent. I think it will all fit though.

Little issue I stumbled across: I only have 2 electricity sockets in the room. That could get tight, hmmmm I thought there were 3. I believe it’s 3600W max per socket.

Flower: CMH 630w, 4x 100W LEDs and whatever the fan pulls… Ah is still gonna be fine. But I will check with my electrician if he can pull me 1 extra line, shouldn’t be hard to do, everything is kinda right there.

Vitamin C will lock out chlorimene and chlorine
I can’t stand RO water It’s way to unstable imo

my water is quite “hard” and acidic, which should both be fine for organic soil.
We look at a rather slightly acidic rather than neutral or base PH in organic soil, right?
And the hardness means it has lots of calcium n stuff so I should be able to go easy on the dolocal ammendment.

Well to be honest bro i quite Phing my water years ago because the soil will change it and i have found that when i add the extra perlite it fixed all my ph issues just by allowing more oxygen into the soil just something to take into consideration

Hey bro im also in germany, u can source local supplies here to replace qhat u looking for… u just need to know what to look for… for example, alfalfa can b found under lucerne for horse feed…

Check out my organic thread, there some info on what i use to create my living soil

U could prolly use this for crabmeal
