The way, I understand it, though you cannot grow tobacco legally in your backyard. I could be wrong, but in some states you could grow weed plants but tobacco would be illegal I believe lol. It’s crazy to think we make all these laws but nobody told the plants lol Cheers @Chara
Tobacco is completely legal to grow on s small scale for personal use. If you want to grow it commercially you will have to get a permit and have the proper zoning for tobacco production
You also need to buy a quota as only so much tobacco can be produced commercially under federal regulations. I see quotas change hands all the time here in Kentucky.
We used to have something called allotments that were similar. They were phased out in the mid 2000’s but the idea was each person could only grow a certain amount on their farm but you could lease another farmers land and their allotment to grow more. It’s still profitable to farm now but not as many people want to grow it commercially anymore. The knowledge to grow it hasn’t been transferred to the next generations and it’s very labor intensive.
The big farms in Virginia and North Carolina have become mechanized for the most part. Around here, it’s all manual labor and this year they don’t have enough workers with the knowledge to harvest it.
