Letter: Marijuana coverage is way over the top

To the editor:
The Berkshire Eagle's preoccupation with marijuana businesses opening in the county is over the top. Your coverage is giddy and lopsided. Day after day, the front page heralds pot shops as if this industry is the long-awaited answer to our prayers. Responsible reporting would include discussions with medical personnel, addiction and recovery professionals, mental health providers, educators and school resource officers, police and social workers and others who may not be as enthusiastic about the open floodgates of so-called recreational marijuana.
Do you remember that not very long ago, this was illegal? And still is in much of the country. Do you remember that our governor, state attorney general, Massachusetts Municipal Association, Massachusetts Medical Society, Mass. Police Chiefs Association, the Legislature's own task force, the mayor of Boston and many other officials strongly opposed recreational marijuana in the commonwealth?
The fact that legalization passed on a ballot measure, well-funded by industry groups, is not in contention. However, The Eagle's coverage of this issue is excessive, one-sided and appears to be promoting the pot business. Reporting without inquiry is merely note taking, not journalism.
