That sounds completely backwards to me!
BUT-- the big difference is mine is under sunshine that will kill you.... double the brightness of HID lights.
There are a ton of factors at play so it's not a simple answer, imo, but I don't discount your point. It's been 10-20 years since I had some great indoor; The increased supply out west has meant the average quality has dropped A LOT. The strain I'm thinking of was a piney indica of some kind and I'll forever miss it... "The Cave" circa '98
A "sterile" grow medium will be expressing the pheno/chemotype and a "boring menu" of nutes and a super-complex organic/soil will allow a much more diverse plant flavor/expression(secondary terpenoids, et al).
Curious-- what about the hydro vs. homegrown organic tomato test? Can these folks honestly prefer the "un-natural" ?
Recently have had the chance to compare my sun-grown with a friend's comm'l 'greymarket' herb & what I'm describing is very evident here. His is prettier & "good enough" but it makes my resin seem like cup-winner stuff(flavor & effect of mine destroys his, hands down IMO).
@ModicumGenes I think a "real" comparison test would have to be done to explain the phenomena; using clones, different feed & media but all else the same...
