Here in Ireland a social meetup, if even brief, needs cheap drink. You cant actually go to anyone’s house without drinking cheap cans. Its not that its socially unacceptable, its literally unthinkable for people.
I still remember the first time I hung out with a foreign person who wasn’t eastern European, we didn’t drink cans for the whole 5 hours, it actually freaked me out. I honestly never realised before that point in life that other nationalities actually do things socially without ceremoniously drinking cheap lager from as early in the day as possible. I met up with my best friend afterwards genuinely having a mini existential crisis about it, and he was there with 16 frosty cold cheap ones by default as always. When I mentioned the existence of the concept of being around people without drinking cans he didn’t even know what I was saying, the words didn’t make sense to the point that I needed to go buy two cheap 8 packs for myself just to calm his anxiety and assure him that we now have enough on us for him to not need to worry about the whole “not drinking” concept, and remind him that there will always be some there when were hanging out. I’ve never brought it up to anyone again, I don’t think my people are ready.
Cheap beer is truly a way of life for many.
