Cheap LED Strips : A Viable Alternative

Just more auto seedlings and i should be able to see differences if there are any barring differences in phenos and specific plant growth characteristics, and 12*280mm strips running a bit over driven say 120% or so at the moment for both sides which are 3sqft a piece, also i use my lights for both no need to swap spectrum’s when one is in the middle general ranges and i haven’t done swaps in spectrum’s in many many years as the differences i noticed didn’t really warrant it specifically in my smaller spaces which tend to favor those middle spectrum’s anyways.

Looking forward to it, wonder if that 4k will keep that plants any more squat than your 3.5k

Thanks for the thoughtful advice. I have checked into the ones you mentioned and I am sold on the HLG 600R. Now with some savings and help from the govt cheese people, I hope to be able to pull the trigger fairly soon. I wish you were closer I would love for you to build one for me. I’m excited at the prospect of a new light. I’m going to put a picture of it on my fridge for motivation. Lol Be safe and well my friend and thanks again!

Blessings…

Cool man, it’s hard to go wrong with the 600R. Both that and the Timber Cypress 8 will grow great weed and I know you’ll be happy no matter what.

There’s some tradeoffs between those two products you should know about before buying:

  1. The Timber will have a better light spread and you can hang it closer to your plants. You don’t have to, but you can. That style of light bars is what everybody’s moving to for small home grows.

  2. The HLG has less total light output than the Timber Cypress in 3000K and a more “blue” spectrum, even though it’s their 600R for “red” spectrum. Since you’re using this just for flowering, you might care. Or you might not. lol!

  3. The Timber option gives you more flexibility than the HLG because the Timber has a lot more horsepower. You won’t need to use all that extra power in a 4x4, but like @Mr.Sparkle said, being able to dim down or turn up when you need to is a very good thing. The Timber can legit flower out a 5x5 space, but I don’t think the HLG can because of how high you have to hang it.

They’re about the same price and you can’t go wrong with either, but I just wanted you to know all the details before you buy.

I just read about those and I’m super interested in your results. Their spectral graph is amazing on those thrives. I’d love that have those as lights in my home. I’m very interested to see what that bump in deep reds does.

I also saw that bridgelux has a new product:

Nominally those squares push 80W.

It doesn’t seem like they’re on the market yet though.

yeah i saw those square board as well, tried to look around for them but to no avail

Hello all. I would like to know what it would take to build a light for a 2’x4’ space. I’m having a bit of difficulty understanding how many gen 2 strips I would need for the space. The building part is no sweat I’m good at wrenching. It’s just trying to figure out all the numbers that go along with the lights to get what’s needed in my space that I’m not getting a good enough grasp of.

What about the Cypress 6? Your thoughts?

I have 11 of the 560 mm opined to a 150 watt driver in my 2x2. You could build 2 of those and be able to raise them independently. Or a bigger driver and build one unit. If you want a 2x4 you can get the 1120mm strips and run 11 for 300 watts… (i believe lol)

How do those 11 seem to you? Overkill, perfect, not enough? You ever run them full blast?

Anything past seedling I run them full. I can be 2 inches above the canopy. But alot of time in veg i lift them a bit to let the plant actually grow vertically lol

Thanks much @Grease_Monkey. That sounds like the perfect setup for me with 2 of those. I was trying to figure out how to have 2 separate lights for my space so I can have adjustment options in case I get a lanky one going.

How tall is your @Grease_Monkey 2x2?

Dont quote me on this… as im sure someone smarter will correct me. But if you wired it right you could probably add a receptacle to the light to allow you to daisy chain the 2 drivers.

@Yawningtears I dunno lol like 4 feet i think? Its just a cheap vivosun tent

So when at 2” full blast you don’t get leaf burn?

I havnt yet lol

I have a little veg tub with some 3500k 2ft EB2 strips mounted to the lid. Turned all the way up, plants don’t get burnt until they actually touch the diodes, and even then it’s just a little white spot where each touched the diode. It doesn’t kill the leaf.

@joecool Good thinking to have two fixtures in your space. Are you using it just for veg or flower or both? It’s totally possible to have two fixtures off 1 driver as well, so keep that in mind for cord management and all that jazz.

@oleskool830 I think the Cypress-6 is OK but a little underpowered. Honestly, you can do quite a bit better for the money if you build one, but I understand anyone who is hesitant to do it. It’s a pain in the ass unless you know what you’re doing and are pretty handy with tools.

That’s what I thought. Noted. Thanks. I will wait for the govt. cheese. 600? 2000? WTFK?

Ms oleskool says “when you consider dropping a grand on a light, it’s no longer a “hobby.” Lol

Well besides it touching and getting a tiny lil spot, any other negatives observed?

I know some have mentioned leaf droop, you ever experience that?

I use the space for both late veg and full flower. I normally use a philzon blurple for seedlings and early veg in a 2’ by 2’ space then move them under the hps to finish a week or 2 of veg and then flower off.
