Citrus Tree Love

How are you forcing bloom?

I dry the sucker out for 30 days where I just give it barely enough water to survive. Then I give it a good watering plus some veg formula from the jug there. Within 2 weeks it blooms. That girl on you tube can tell you about it as well. Marcelina Noss. She says it’s dangerous, but I’m not sure how dry she gets her plants. I guess I don’t dry them out as hardcore heh heh. I force bloomed the grape fruit 3 times in one year!

Thanks. I will look her up.

I definitely need to start growing my own grapefruit! What growing conditions does it need?

Excuse the ‘powdery mildew look’ in reality it is just drywall dust and paint. These plants were real troopers, I neglected them for the last 10 months in the corner of our new home renos. This is what is salvaged, I am in Canada and hada go at some ‘tropical plants’. Mostly citrus, lemon, and oranges. I’ve had time to give them some attention and they are growing out of the nasty. I will likely spend some time pruning these this summer after they’ve had some time outdoors.

Also pictured are baby Medjool Date Palms (look like grass)

and Yellow Flesh Dragon Fruit Cacti

I also had some luck with Guava trees, but they did not survive the renos.

Have to add - their environment was cold nights, with dry heated wood stove fire during the day, and a winter wonder land surrounding the place… I’m very surprised I had anything left. These plants were started in the summer of 2020 from seed.

I’ve had my tree regenerate from some pretty hairy conditions alright. I remember it had 10 leaves this one time from the cold.
These are the current fruits, I think it’s time to cull the smaller ones!

I really like the look of that one orange tree, it’s got huge leaves! Any crud on there is BTK to eliminate the thrips, but the strange part is, I don’t think the thrips can attack the citrus tree. I’ll have to play around with that concept later.

Are the little fruits gonna make 'er? Hopefully!! There are two of them, and I cut off most with the exacto.

Turns out you need a parasite called “citrus thrips” to chew on those citrus trees. Who would have thought that different thrips attack different plants. This coming from some dude who sprays his onions outside for “onion thrips”. Shoulda known.

Ohhh little fruits! I’ll have to use the net sling to support these babies. It’s made out of an onion bag and some twine.

I’ve just harvested and have no large fan leaves to rehydrate my jars…all I have are 2 lemon trees…I actually used a Pink Variegated Lemon tree leaf and put it in my jars for rehydration…works great, the leaf also has a lemon aroma too…@JoeCrowe, have you ever put new growth in cloners?

I found that on the grapefruit it works better with second year growth. The lemon trees work better with new growth. I haven’t done an exhaustive investigation though, just a handful of tree clones. The grapefruit I used water culture to root and the lemon I used a dome and potting soil. I used gel rooting hormone on both.

This is Lemmy. They are 18 plus years old, has been through lots of ups and downs. Really hoping they perk up after food and water and springtime.

I’m totally gonna start popping citrus beans now though.

I always cut off a branch if it actually dies. Sometimes the branch looks dead but it’s green and will regrow! This strange ridge in the bark tells you if the branch died or not. I cut it off just above the ridge. Right above my finger, it’s like a hair crack in the bark and a tiny raised ridge.

Well, since they are growing nicely, I declare all of them are viable trees. I’m going to have to “do” something with my plantation, like move it somewhere else!

I imagine each citrus flower has it’s own smell. I’m still smelling it here, another cluster has bloomed. Did it just bloom naturally, or forced bloom?

Naturally…I cant wait to replant it to a bigger pot this Spring…
