Well, if i can get the “bean” garage up and running, … That just may happen my friend.
Cinderella 99
When Brothers Grimm shut down in 2002, the original Cinderella 99 seed stock was quickly depleted and unavailable until their resurrection in 2016. During the dozen or so years that passed between, C99 became more than just popular, it reached cult status as the “Holy Grail” of indoor marijuana.
The resulting plants have been extensively grown and tested in 2016 and found to satisfy the pickiest grower’s expectations of stable, reliable phenotype. The seedlings have very little variation, having been bred for uniformity – they grow with similar scents, flowering time, potency, yield, and growth structure. And the finished buds will impress any weed connoisseur’s demands for bag appeal, flavor and quality of high.
The dried, cured flowers are rich in terpenes ranging from sweet tropical fruit, to stinky rotten cheese… sometimes all in the same bud – the flavors and aromas are sublime. And of course, there’s the famous C99 high – devastatingly psychoactive, yet clear – you’ll feel like getting creative, playing music, or making art.
The Cinderella Story – as told by MrSoul:
In 1996, I discovered a few seeds in a bud of Jack Herer I bought @ “Sensi Smile” coffee shop in Amsterdam while there to buy seeds. I didn’t expect much when I grew them, but one of those seeds from the Jack Herer bud produced a very special female that I call “Princess”. She had devastatingly psychoactive resin and stayed short, compact and had a heavenly aroma of tropical fruit and rotten meat.
The scent given off by Princess, was unusual in the late 90’s – not at all skunky – she’s sweet and fruity. Someone passing by the flowering room MIGHT not recognize the scent as pot and mistake it for tropical flowers. When you rub the resin you can definitely smell it. The high of Princess is also more “psychedelic” or “trippy” compared to the strains like Skunk #1 that were popular. I always advised friends to smoke a LITTLE, wait 10 minutes, then think about whether or not you need any more…it’s easy to over-indulge and become paranoid.
We can assume Princess’ mother was a Jack Herer not only because Sensi Smile printed it on the package, but also because I’ve smoked verified Jack Herer since then. So Princess’ father is a totally unidentified mystery plant – his pollen somehow got in Sensi’s growroom. Princess had two sisters join her from that same bud. I called them Genius & Café Girl. There were also 3 males from those seeds which regrettably, I didn’t preserve. Genius became the mother of the Brothers Grimm Apollo lines, while Café Girl gave us Rosetta Stone, and Princess of course, created Cinderella 99.
I wanted to create a strain that would allow me to share Princess with others, but I wanted this incredible “Holy Grail” of indoor clones available to the world in SEED form. I decided to use a technique called “cubing” to create the seeds. Here’s how cubing works:
Pollinate a flowering clone of the chosen female with the pollen of a related male, preferably her father or a brother – to preserve any female traits that are linked to the male side of the family. An unrelated male won’t have the Y-chromosome of the chosen female’s family & therefore any Y-linked traits of the family will always be missing in the seed line. The resulting seeds contain 1/2 the original female’s genes and 1/2 those of the male.
Grow the above seeds & flower them.
Pollinate a flowering clone of the chosen female with pollen from a male selected from the above group. These seeds contain 1/2 the chosen female’s genes plus 1/4 more from the male being 1/2 her genetics too. I call this first back-cross generation .75 to capture the idea that it’s 3/4 of the original female’s genetics.
Grow the above seeds & flower them.
Pollinate a flowering clone of the chosen female, using a selected male from the above generation. These seeds contain 7/8 the original genes (1/2+3/8), so this second back-cross is the .88 generation.
Grow the above seeds & flower them.
Pollinate a flowering clone of the original female with pollen from a selected male off the above generation. These seeds contain 15/16 the original genes (1/2+7/16), in other words, so we’ll call this third back-cross the “.94” generation.
Theoretically, this will be a stable, true-breeding seed line from which all females are replicas of the original. Cinderella 99 seeds are created from a male P94 crossed to Princess, which is technically P97.
In the process of “cubing” Princess I wanted to add a little strength to her branches because the buds were always so heavy at harvest that the branches flopped over. To do that, I crossed a male from a heavy-yielding, dense, resinous strain, Sensi’s Shiva Skunk. Crossing that male to Princess created the “P.50” generation (using the shorthand notation I developed to indicate the fraction of Princess genes in the cross).
Each generation is the result of crossing a male from the previous generation to Princess herself.
Here’s a blow-by-blow description of the generations as they tested in my garden:
P.50 = Heavy, single-cola type plants with mellow high (too much influence from the Shiva Skunk) Sweet fruity scent/flavor. Unstable in most traits – for example, 10 days’ difference in fastest/slowest maturation period in a group of 20 seedlings.
P.75 = Princess floral cluster and bud structure, scent/flavor turned more “tropical” like pineapple. The stability was becoming better – two major phenotypes; short & dense (potent too) or tall/HUGE (less potent).
P.88 = Renamed Cinderella 88 when first released on the market. It grows fast and produces excellent yields of FROSTY buds in 7 weeks! Generally uniform seedlings with minor differences in floral formation and some height variance, but the smoke is quite consistent from all plants – Dense, heavy nuggets of fruity scented & flavored (like wild berries) and covered in resin glands, the dried buds have distinctly ORANGE pistils.
And finally, the male P.94 cross to the Princess clone creates Cinderella 99. The name “Cinderella” was chosen because of the parallels between this story and the well-known fairy tale in which Cinderella becomes a Princess despite her humble beginning.
Each generation exhibited a MAJOR jump in potency: P.50 was rather mellow, P.75 has a well-balanced body/mind high with a citrus flavor, Cinderella 88 is cerebral and paralyzing with a tropical fruit flavor, and Cinderella 99 is of course renowned for the fruity flavor and speedy, scary high inherited from Princess.
This project clearly became a huge success. The strain has been embraced by the cannabis growing community. The smokers gave rave reviews & the breeders elevated Cinderella 99 to cult status. It’s extremely gratifying to me, MrSoul that so many hybrids were created by breeders who recognized C99 as a stable parental stock from which to build or tweak another variety. It’s a big compliment to me as the breeder, and a huge testament to the enduring quality of Cinderella 99.
Had to share these photo’s with ya all!..
Typical stalk, or maybe I should re-word that, Typical “trunk” of a Glass Slipper plant. Only 2 1/2 feet tall, and only 3 days into flowering…
Its the extreme “genetics” that make the roots florish… “Roots” that pump these babies up!
When a plant has an abundant supply of roots, It then plenishes the plant with them vital nutrients in a BIG way. Which in turn, makes a typical plant turn into a “Monster”…
Amazing, to say the very least…
She still fascinates me, even 22 years later…
My “One” Love. I’m really baked. Excuse me, …Gotta grab a Coke.
Having a very painful morning folks!
I was walking down my wet stairs, and slipped and fell. I didnt twist my ankle or anything, but it sure knocked the wind out of me. Slight bruising…
Anyways, on with the show this is it!!
GS relaxing in the tub…
Gotta be easy on the “GIT R DONE” at times man lol.
Glad ya didn’t break nothing
Me too!.. lol
Ya, I gotta watch them stairs,… especially when there wet!!
Thanks for the words Brotha’ Man. Im gonna be relaxing today, in bed. Gonna watch some football later on, and eat some bbq ribs with my Woman…
Have a nice day Man.
Should look into an RO system, i use to run a used one i got for free from a co worker when i lived in an area where my tap water was in the 800µS range year round, even with old filters would come out in the 60-80µS range
Good afternoon Mr. Sparkle!
Nice of you to stop by. Like a celebrity rolling up in a limo… lol
Actually, I already have a water filtration setup here at my crib…
It purifies the water quite nicely(12 ppm). Only one problem, after the water is purified, I then lose the calcium and magnesium… Then I have to deal with adding cal mag, etc…
Too much fries em out, too little does no good etc… Ah the heck with it! Plus, it stains the hell out of the roots. I’m cool…
I like “tap water” the best. Just add 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of Jack’s ferts for soil, and Im done. Or for hydro… 1/4 teaspoon of Jacks Hydroponic mix, and 1/4 teaspoon of calcium nitrate per gallon… Done.
The ph ALWAYS goes straight to 5.8. without messing with any of that ph up or down. That shit’s bad too… No one can tell me its not.
I know alot of you like tinkering around with all that, Its not in me. I like keeping things ultra “simple” and un-polluted… Plants seem to like the “cleaner” food as well.
I despise putting a bunch of this, that , and the other thing in my root zone, or soil. Then, all sorts of problems come into effect, and you get all these degrading issues… Its a vicious cycle. Ive been down that road many, many times my friend. And it usually leads to a dead end.
I like the K.I.S.S. method… Ultra simplicity at its best! GIT-R-DONE mode… lol
Thank you very much for your input/advice Mr. Sparkle. Much appreciated!..
You have excellant plant knowledge, and If we meet one day, Ill buy ya a potent drink, and we’ll shoot the shit… lol
Have a great day!
By the way folks… Im thinking of going with the directions on the back of the Jack’s tub, and thinking of giving them ONLY 1/4 teaspoon every watering, all the way through flowering! … Gambling I know. But, it cant hurt.
My best friend grew the Slipper for years, and his plants turned out great with far less fertilizer. The 1/2 teaspoon thing, may of been too much after all!.. We’ll see.
One characteristic about me,… I like taking things to the extremes! I always have, always will. I thought more food=bigger plants. Now, Im not quite sure.
Im starting to believe I may have over fed my girls for a good long time…Its a good possibility. Or maybe this new atmosphere is affecting things, and my plants are reacting different because of it. Just dont have the facts.
Anyways, Trying something new. Onward with the 1/4 teaspoon dose til they get chopped! Might yield less, Might yield MORE??
Proof’s in the pudding…
I firmly believe when you keep the plant constant and steady she does better. What would be more constant, a big hit of food with water once every few waterings, where some are just water, others have food in it, at some certain PPM or EC, OR a low and steady feed every time it is watered?
WHAT jacks formula you using??? Curious as to your PPM levels ??? What are the NPK #'s
I use the Jacks classic bloom nutes @ 1/4 teaspoon per gallon for the soil plants, And using 1/4 teaspoon of Jack’s Professional nutes, with the same amount of calcium nitrate per gallon.
So, for the hydro, there running at 650 ppm… Soil, not sure.
Hydro: 5-12-26 and calcium nitrate 15-0-0 all the way.
Soil: 20-20-20 veg. 10-30-20 bloom
Classic Bloom meaning their 1/3/2 formula 10/30/20 on the bottle???
Confused a bit on your usage and amounts.
Jack’s advises 1 teaspoon (4 grams or so) per gallon…for constant feed. Good number I would think, maybe even go a touch less.
SO…for hydro your using a 50/50 mix of 5/12/26 and 15/0/0 at 1/4 teaspoon per gallon??
For dirt veg with 20/20/20 and then flower with just the bloom at 10/30/20 at what amount???
1 teaspoon per gallon( I use teaspoons not grams) of your 20/20/20 would be about 600 PPM plus your base water.
THAT is a good STEADY feed amount. Do not like the 20/20/20 for veg, but the PPM at 4 grams(teaspoon) is fine.
Where it me, for Veg I would “mix” the 20/20/20 with the 15/0/0 to achieve a better veg ratio closer to 2/1/1 .
The plant will much prefer you feeding them a steady diet, rather than nothing, feed, nothing, feed. They do not feed that way in nature in the ground, but steadily pull nutes up.
Posted that info many, many times Jetdro!.. lol
Ok, for hydro, I give em 1/4 teaspoon of hydro formula, and 1/4 teaspoon of calcium nitrate per gallon.
Im thinking of keeping the dose at 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of each til the chop. The directions says 1/2 teaspoon of both all the way through… Wanna give em less, and see what happens.
For dirt… 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of veg ferts… and gonna give them the same exact amount with the bloom ferts til the end…
And a fresh update on the Glass slipper grow…
1/4 teaspoon worth of Jack’s bloom food and that is ALL! The lower temps, and the lighter dose has made a World of difference!.. “Less is more”
6 days into flowering
**Extremely bushy!.. Lots of cola sites!! ** The prune has done em justice!
**GS hydro plant is putting on some new foliage, as well… **
Great card and pen gift .
Heck ya! But the pen doesn’t work… huh.
