That type of aggressive defoliation is called Schwazzing.
Keep in mind that plants use their leaves to breathe with, for cation exchange and use them for photosynthesis to make energy in which to grow. You can stunt your plants growth by doing this and you can also lessen your final yield.
How fast could you function if you took out one of your lungs? That’s what the plant is going through when heavy defoliation occurs.
True but I’ve had issues with super bushy plants. Sometimes fan leaves get stuck together and it creates a high humidity pocket where PM can thrive. I tried not plucking one fan leave on a plant outdoors two summers ago and I found PM on plants when I pried leaves open. I live in a desert area as well and humidity was around 15% all summer.
I have a big 12 inch oscillating fan on 24/7 and with the strip I don’t have to worry about a thing (other than a plant herming). Humidity is in check too. To each his own.
I live in the Mojave Desert in California where we normally receive less that 10% humidity most days during the summer months with temps well above 110°, so I understand what it means to grow cannabis in a hot climate… and succeed at it.
I wasn’t talking about removing a leaf here and there. I was talking about heavy defoliation and what can come from it when the plant is forced to use its stored reserves.
I don’t really care what people “think” or “believe” when it comes to plants, I care about actual, proven facts.
what are these “stored reserves” you speak of after a heavy defoliation?
I run a almost pure salt program and I only increase or decrease feed if the girls leaves ask for it. I like to feed every hour to hour and a half to get hydro results in coco. Don’t plants take only what they need from the feed? I’m interested in knowing.
Yeah ditch that heavy defoliation and focus on even canopies. I only remove fan leaves that are sitting on bud sites worth keeping. I try and tuck them away before removing. I went too aggressive supercropping and hermied 3 plants this last grow.
Defoliation aka ‘Leafing’ will never lead to a larger harvest.
Plants need leaves to accomplish photosynthesis, they use photosynthesis to produce the sugars and other substances they need for growth. The leaves are not only used for cation exchange, but they are also used to store excess sugars to be used later by the plant for floral production. Excess sugars may also be stored in the branches, meristem and roots.
If I read a book, it will most definitely be about plants or something to do with them.
I’ve been reading about growing all types of plants since I learned how to read as a child… it is, by far, my favorite subject to learn about… and I try to learn something new each day and love giving out free plant information. I’ve read all of Ed Rosenthal’s books, all of Jorge Cervantes’ books and everything from Mel Frank, all three exhibit a lot of ‘trial & error’ in their writings, but none of them are as informative as the writings of renowned Cannabis Botanist R C Clark. Read some of his work and become enlightened on the subject of growing cannabis.
I encourage you to learn as much as you can about the plants you enjoy growing… you’ll be a better grower because of it!
Thanks. They are stacking nicely this run.
The lone Wedding cake plant has the best smell when I shove my face in it. Lol. Overall odor is weak - I’m running a scrubber 24/7 to keep it down.
Ah yes. Used to frequent the Dead concerts at Calexpo back in the 80s 90s. Enjoyed the parking lot party scene more than the actual concerts.
Mountain View was one of my favorite places to go see the Dead play… it always turned into a weekend of pure splendor. The fun we had with the substances we used… good times for sure!
