I used to use these years ago and i loved them.they came in blocks of 72 like rockwool,same kind of material that fake plants get stuck into,its like a spong tjat doesnt bounce back.very easy to dent or break,they were fairly fragile,but the roots loved them…i cant for the life of me remember what they are called

FloraFlex foam plugs?
Not a fan of these, personally. But they are similar to the material you are describing. They are foam and easy to dent if you squeeze them.
