Dark Sparks with Mr.Sparkle : Growing 2019

Remember that girl in total recall? This little dark spark reminds me of her.

Here is her sister.

Looks pretty cool, maybe it will be an advantageous trait somehow. Did you do pockets of ground coco for these seedlings? They’re really taking off!

Ran all my coco lightly through a blender lol

I was finding that the chunks by themselves didn’t really help the initial tap roots as the air gaps were too large for keeping the roots in contact with the coco for moisture purposes, so they would dry out on sections or dampen off from me trying to keep them wt to counteract that.

So just made the mix actually have some small chunks and fibers apart from the big chunks, saying that some measurement i took at the time, the blended stuff still held the same amount of water as the straight chunk coco did but the blended stuff took up more volume (10-15%), meaning its an airier mix, and the water holding being the same i would attribute to water tension and surface area properties on the new mix.

I just figured with all the “Gadgets and Doodads” I have seen in your threads that you would already have a “designated” blender for use in whatever project you are doing…

very good assumption, but nah im actually sorta minimalist in a sense, and have a hard time keeping around things that are only for one specific purpose well with in reason, but more was like if my blender blades dull, i’ll just give them a quick sharpen, cheapish blender anyways.

Actually im on a cleaning binge right now, saying that all my arduino stuff is now gone as of last night as its served its purpose and i learned from it and did what i was looking for at the time but pre build options are available for the minor control i do now and cheap too, so no need to build my own circuits, keeping it simple.

Awesome, being short time frame autos they just need good starts, but tell him not to care if he needs to pull a mutant if they show, they are all for fun and to learn from

4 days later and they are pretty much the same size.

Here’s what i think is going on, this new chunky coco is too dense for initial root growth or is providing obstructions for the tap root. So when its trying to drive down and hits a hard chunk the plant has to work at either growing through or around the object, but also slows down in the process with that challenge.

I pulled a bunch of seedlings to look and in every case whether the better plants or the runts, all of them displayed issues when they hit something. Obviously a lot more to everything than that, but saying that i culled a bunch in the process and i’m gonna be trying one more thing in helping the tap root drive down as fast and nicely as possible for starts. If not my local hydro store opens on tuesday and im just gonna pick up a bag of canna coco.

So started some more seeds and will be working on a next cycle with a few changes, but i kept some of the better seedlings for now.

Whaddya think about indulging your noisy  neighbor here and making a comparison… use a “drain layer” of coco-chunks with looser/finer coco on top?

:evergreen_tree:

Ha I said that to him as well…

We all know our lovely Sparkle likes the utmost best plants…

These weak weeklings needs to go!

really no point in a drain layer when were only talking about 4" of media “little pots” but it is something i may have to do with these square pots as the holes in the bottom are larger than what i have done in the past, so the finer coco would just partially wash out.

hey Mr. Sparkle it’s been awhile since i’ve been around the forums. I use to follow your threads on afn, then i remember you said on ic that you were over here. Well this is the first thread i read through on this site and i’m now a member lol. I can say your work always seems to amaze me. That closet build is bad ass, I remember I tried building a iguana cage once and that was just no good
