DIY Nutrient Supplements

Just wrapping up a run, haven’t grown in a while.
Doing Coco, autopots. Was running GH’s 3 part line, with CalMag and silica, but wasn’t a fan of mixing the liquids, so switched to MasterBlend powder.

Growth was great, but didn’t really produce much resinous buds. Probably was the genetics more than anything else. But, wanted to try out, side by side, a straight MB feeding regime against one of the more “complex” commercial lines, to see if there is a difference. Doing three different strains, three plants on each nutrient regime, clones of a mother.

I was pricing out trying either Canna Coco’s line, or Advanced Nutrient’s “intermediate” line. I’m super doubtful either will beat MB basic, but wanted to give it a good side by side comparison. But in doing some research, looks like I can mix up all of the “additives” and “supplements” the commercial lines make for maybe 10% of the cost (http://opensalts.wikidot.com/). Gave it a go to AI and asked it to formulate all of AN and Canna’s line, and it gave me recipes that lined up exactly with OpenSalts.

Just curious if anyone else is doing this, making their own supplements and additives from basic chemicals found at CustomHydroNutrients or somewhere else. Don’t see much talk about doing it, so not sure if it’s not really possible, too complicated, or ineffective.

But for roughly $120 in chemicals, seems worthwhile to give it a side by side comparison to check for myself.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Are you thinking of making these from mostly scratch, ie: blending your own micros or modifying masterblend to be closer to AN?

I was going to use straight MB and CalMag in one half.

The other half I was going to use MB as the base nutrient, then add Canna or AN “homemade” supplements. I found a Rhizotonic (Canna), B-52 (AN), Cannazym (Canna), Voodoo Juice (AN), Tasty Terps (AN), Bud Candy (AN), Boost (Canna), Big Bud (AN), PK 13/14 (Canna), and Overdrive (AN) “DIY” recipes.

So was either going to formulate a Canna clone, or an AN clone, but using MB as the base/micro.

I do make my own water soluble additives using KOH, heat and agitation.

Right now I work with:

Humalite = fulvic and humic acids
D.Earth = my silica supliment
Azomite = trace minerals

I did try insect frass but that went horrifying as the powdered shells jellied!

Because of the KOH there is always an added K+ but it all works really well.
