Jack Herer Auto (front right)
Cookies Auto (front left)
Bruce Banner Auto (back right)
Orange Sherbert Auto (back left)
(All white labels - but we’re getting much welcomed upgrade in genetics for the next runs moving forward - AH Yeah!)
Anyway, I think I have about 2 weeks left for the Cookies and 1 week for the Jack Herer according to the trichromes.
Just wanted to ask OG members if harvesting Indicas, Sativas, and hybrids are all done at the same roughly 5-30% amber to cloudy ratio. Or, perhaps earlier for sativas compared to indicas? Not too sure, hoping to confirm this. Thanks!
I do not remember what the topic name was (I have read a lot of posts on here), but there was a discussion about some strains (possibly sativas specifically?) that just don’t go amber until they’re well past done (or at all). They talked a lot about pistil color and trichome shape being more accurate indicators than trichome color.
My only harvest so far had to get pulled way early, so I do not have experience to share, but if you do some searching around, you might find that topic I mentioned. I might be able to dig around later, if I can I’ll share the link.
Thanks C_in_CT, that’s very interesting. I’ve only read on the amber-cloudy ratio indicating time for harvest. Never even considered pistil color or trichrome shape. Lot’s to consider.
Some folks have shared that their autos didn’t go amber as expected, though mine seem to.
I am curious too about your original question. I just harvested half my auto sativa-type early, and half late, to see what the late harvest more “sleepy” version of that high is like.
That’s all personal preference and will vary from person to person and strain to strain. Majority milky is peak thc. Amber is from oxidation and causes the thc to break down into other cannabinoids changing the effect.
Some people growing for certain medical uses even crop with a higher percentage of clear for higher concentrations of other cannabinoids. The best thing you can do is crop at two or three stages with new strains until you start learn your own preferences. In the end, people telling others when they should harvest is pretty much the same as telling people how to order their steaks.
I ran into a potassium deficiency and before I could fix it (or slow it down - rather) the trichhromes seemed to go slightly amber already on the one of the Jack Herer tops. So, I dried it last night and vaped it. It was very ‘sleepy’ and thinking to harvest really soon because I’m looking for a sativa-dominant effect.
I have come to find out that if i choose to let them grow longer looking for amber trichs with autoflowers always causes a problem, some revegg, some start growing more budsights or the end result is less than great . I believe that auto’s have a smaller harvest window and going before or beyond it dramatically changes the potency.
Im always suprised how unmature the buds look when harvesting autos. Just my opinion
I’ve not run in to any strains that don’t produce amber trichromes nearing the end of it’s grow cycle. I have also grown a good number of plants that kept producing new white pistils right up to the day I harvested them. I may see that more with autos then with photos.
These are all great comments here.
Though this one stands out to me because it is very similar to what I was about to post.
For sure.
And I will add…
Autoflowers can produce an entirely different expression if maturity in themselves. That said; I’ve had many an auto go from like 10% amber to 40 overnight. Theyre just weird, lol.
Your best bet for harvest window should include multiple indicators.
Trichomes: Only one of them, and not a great one in my opinion. We all know the clear, cloudy, amber thing.
Pistils: The majority orange/ambering and curling inward. Again, not foolproof.
Thirst: Most plants will start drinking less when they’re ready to be done. As back-breaking as it is, I lift pots.
The fade: I like this one. Think of it like Fall. Leaves changing color. As your gals approach senescence they should start to fade. This usually this brings out some neat colors like purple and reds. But don’t be scared of some yellow.
Medium Rare or bust with a fine steak… but I harvest all my plants with very little amber (if any) and mostly cloudy. I used to go longer many moons ago for test purposes with Outdoor crops, and it’s not necessary and isn’t my cup of tea… Cloudy FIR Life!
It really depends on each individual strain man bc some sativas really struggle to go to Amber late flower and you can just drag it out forever. My motto regardless of Indica sativa hybrid is mostly cloudy heads plain and simple. Having a few Amber and even clear here and there is fine as long as the majority cloudy. Been growing for a while now and spending that extra week or two waiting for some certain Amber percentage really isn’t worth the time or effort
Okay growmies, my girl looks like she’s ready. 9 1/2 weeks out of a 9-11 week window. Id say maybe 5 percent amber trichomes but fox tails are still growing at top. What do you all think
I grew autos thinking they would be beginner friendly and also enticed by the fast harvest time. But, will stick to photoperiods now on to really learn and understand this plant as fully as I can. Autos are definitely finicky and challenging. Maybe stick one in the corner if I got some space down the line.
It’s also good to hear how everyone likes their finished herb and also how you guys like your steaks It really does seem to be based on personal preference after all.
Thanks blowdout2269 for breaking it down like that. very easy for this rookie to follow.
il_medical Man, those looking ultra nice to me, foxtail or not, I’d hit it.
Is foxtailing just an aesthetics issue or does affect the effects at all?
