Hello all you OGers. I get asked allot how I collect and clean pollen so instead of having to type it out over and over I decided to just make a thread so I can point people to it when they ask. There are many methods for this but this is what I do.
I get a metal bowl and grab each branch. I smack each branch against the inside of the bowl a few times and repeat for each branch on the male. You will inevitably break a branch from time to time but don’t worry, just lay it across the plant and it will keep doing it’s thing. Here is a link to a short video I made to show what I am talking about.
I then take a card and scrape all the pollen down to the bottom of the bowl and now it’s time to clean out the plant material. For this I use a pollen shaker that looks like this.
Simply scoop the material out of the bowl and fill the pollen shaker about 1/3 of the way. Then I bang the pollen shaker into my palm repeatedly for a couple minutes. This makes the pollen go through the screen in the bottom of the shaker and into the bottom cap. After a few minutes you remove the bottom cap, dump out the clean pollen and put the cap back on. Then dump out the plant material and repeat the steps until all the material is cleaned. Here is what it looks like when done. This is just over 50 grams of BOG Blue Moon Rocks pollen.
Now lay the pollen out as thin as you can in low humidity to dry. Usually around a few days to a week. Then I put it into a sealed container, in my case I use an ammo box with a gasket so it’s air tight. I put a portable dehumidifier in with it. I use these.
They are cheap and rechargeable. One warning courtesy of @Gpaw , when recharging these units don’t use an extension cord but rather plug it directly into the wall. That way your extension cord won’t melt down and possibly cause a fire.
So that’s it on my method. Hope you find it helpful.
Thanks for sharing your methods, I’ve been curious myself. There are a lot of great people on OG and the amount of time and positive energy you give to the community is pretty exceptional. Everyday I log in, there’s Doug giving away more free seeds. Cheers!
They come and go on Amazon. If you Google " 4.5” Aluminum Pollen Shaker" you will find a number of sources or just keep trying Amazon until they restock. Here is one link for them but don’t know the place personally.
I’m following this for sure. Any suggestions on where to get washers to send seeds to members. I’m running out of what I have been reusing from my own gifted seeds
Sorry Bruv…That Link U dropped in San Diego, U ever Order from there?..Once I Overstood what the Pollen Shaker does, my Strainer Idea went out the window…LoL… Thanks for Sharing Family
BONG
I always just ordered them from Amazon personally.
No, as I mentioned in that post, I don’t know the place. It just came up with the Google search. I ordered mine from Amazon and then a second from a head shop in the USA and had a USA member ship it to me. Amazon stock tends to come and go fast but it does pop up from time to time. I got a second one just as a backup but they should last for ages.
Just so you know, you can use an extension cord for practically anything, but you must have the right gauge(thickness). Using a heavy duty 12 or 10 gauge will work fine without worries of overheating. The more electricity used, the thicker the gauge is needed. The longer extension you need, the thicker it will need to be. One thing people dont consider as well, is the outlets capacity. Using a 15 amp outlet might not be sufficient for stuff that pulls serious electricity. In that case, replacing an outlet with a 30 amp will be better, and prevent burning of the outlet, and a possible fire.
The reason why appliances that use a lot of power say to not use an extension cord, is most people don’t understand this, and will use a standard size extension cord, like a 16 gauge which is too thin.
Absolutely. I have some heavy duty cords at the lake I use with heaters. I would never use a crappy thin cord on one of them. I just figured best to mention it. I would bet some out there don’t even think about the gauge of the wire and look at one extension cord the same as the next. You make very valid points though.
If you’re searching online the most suitable ones I’ve found are when I search for “rubber tap washers” just double check the size to make sure your not about to buy one that are 1" diameter but with only a 2mm hole in the center. You want something more like the washers needed to fix those plastic garden hose connectors.
You’re right, and its an honest mistake many make. Its good to point out though, because many will set up a grow room, and not consider this. Not doing so can result in a fire, because capacity of electrical components are not considered. Outlets are common to over look too. I made this mistake myself in the past. Dont expect to pull a lot of power with lights, a/c and other devices in a standard outlet/receptacle. It might need to be upgraded.
Anyways nice thread and thank you for the info! Excellent!
I amazin searched for garden hose washers. they are a great size for coin flips and nice to have a backup function if youre gonna have a whole box of em
