Dry Ice Sieving and Storing

I don’t know is this is the right section, but i could not find one that fits the bill.

So if a mods wants to move the topic, feel free!

I like to use dry ice to sieve but you cannot seem to store it in the freezer. It is supposed to be dangerous, but there are always rebellious people that dare to differ.

And i happen to like them, they are fun and can save you a buck or two. Like this sympathetic guy on a Dutch growing forum who said he stores dry ice without problems in the freezer. I am a little hesitant to go by the experience of one person so i decided to pop the question right here where i assume those that know these type of things hang out!

Can you store dry ice in the freezer?

Here’s hoping i won’t make an ass out of none!!

Perhaps for a short term…

The problem is dry ice starts to sublimate at -78C (-110F) so unless you have a really cold freezer… it’s going to slowly disappear.

Good question.
Enough so that i had to read around a little.

This how-to says no.
They favorise storing dry ice in a styrofoam chest instead and leave that in a cool place in the house.

It will last in the freezer overnight or for 6-8 hours. There will be some loss(like 15% maybe) but it’ll still be usable. I do it when I need to, but never for all that long. It does sublimate fairly quickly. Just be aware that it will also drop the temp of your freezer and potentially damage whatever it’s next to. They recommended a pretty standard cooler to me at the dry ice shop for storage unless you want to shell out for some type of dewar or other expensive container. Styrofoam works too!

Thanks for the replies, i know now i will have to use the dry ice the same day i purchase it for optimal usage.

I just recently had some dry ice from a shipment of Alaskan seafood. I put it in the frezer and was going to throw it in a sink full of water while some unsuspecting family member did some dishes. Later that same day i got my chance and much to my surprise the dry ice had disappeared into thin air.
