Hello,
Another question that im not 100% sure about.
From what I gather I need to slow dry 7-14 days at 60/60 (approxamatly) and adjust the conditions so it suits zhe flowers.
My question is about trimming tho, when is the best time to trim right when I cut or after its dry. I have seen you can do both. Considering I trim before cutting how does that imact dry times/temps/humidity. Its less stuff so probably shorter yes? Or do i adjust the room so its the same lenght time wise.
And if i do not trimm before should I still trim the leaves that are clearly in bad condition and what are the times/temps/humidities than.
Also I would love to hear how you guys use trimmings!
Thank you in advance!
Thats a solid guideline, but what really matters is the moisture in the plants. As soon as the stems have give and audibly snap, then I bag them up for cure. Lotta people overdry their buds. It only takes 4-5 days in my climate, even inside with AC and everything.
I wouldnt worry about the trim looking ugly or anything. Ugly trim can make amazing hash or edibles. I recommend making simple bubble hash with leftover trim. It makes great smoke, and also melts down really easily into oil/butter for nice edibles.
This is a good question, the answer is going to rely on your drying area/room conditions. For example, I dry in my basement(in Missouri) which is close to that 60/60 and I have to wet trim the big stuff off before hang drying or they’re going to go out closer to 20 days of dry time.
And how long is the time after you trim them? Im also gonna be close to 60/60 maybe 50/70 Il see and adjust.
Thank you! Il read into making hash. Il remember the twig snap thing!
That environment and timing for drying is just a guideline. What matters the most, is to do it slow and long. Too quick means it was too dry or hot and terpenoids and cannibinoids have metabolized more than you’d probably like.
As for trimming, it’s best to leave it on while drying to accommodate a slower dry. It’s okay to remove large fan leaves to minimize pockets of high humidity surrounding the buds. But, don’t trim before drying, as the goal is a long and slow dry.
I aim for 10-14 days of drying. If it’s quicker than that due to not manipulating the environment, I usually am not happy with the results. Your mileage may vary, of course.
I wet trim simply because it’s much easier than trying to dry trim. Dry trimming is a PITA. But many people swear by it because the buds dry slower if you leave all the leaf on.
I am happy with my results wet trimming though, so that’s what I stick with. But the area I dry in is pretty easy to maintain 60% humidity. So I don’t have to worry too much about stuff drying too fast.
I find as long as it takes at least 5 days to dry I’m good. Ideally I shoot for more like 10 though.
Also, I’d rather jar it a day early than a day late. You can always open the jars and let more moisture out.
Thnx for the awnser. Just a question shouldnt you open up the jars every day?
I think we all have a preference, I remove anything without sugar when I chop first and toss that stuff, then on bigger flowers I will trim the tips of the sugar leaves off and save all that and any sparse looking buds those go in the feeder, then I hang and dry
As you can see I do ok. I am not on the level of some OGers, but this is what works for me now, I am always looking for a better way and more knowledge.
You can burp your jars daily or sometimes multiple times a day or you can buy Grove bags and set it and forget it. I use Grove bags and have for years. Grab some battery powered humidity sensors. I use them in the groves to make sure i maintain the humidity i want. You can add them to your jars too.
As for drying, i use a humidifier with a sensor when i dry in order to obtain a specific humidity. I dry at 65% humidity with lots of air flow of new air in and old out. My area is usually very dry. I also don’t dry until i hear a snap. I like a little bit of a bend still in my branch. You can also dry for longer if you keep your humidity and heat in check. When you dry correctly you’re not just keeping mold away you’re also allowing the chlorophyll to dissipate from the bud. Too fast a dry and you lock that taste and smell of fresh cut grass into your buds. Sometimes i let the smaller branches get to a full snap but the bigger branches creak more than they do snap. You’ll find what works for with trial and error.
Take note of what works well and doesn’t. You’ll be drying and curing weed like a pro in no time.
I should also say if the buds have crazy leaf to bud ratio i wet trim any airflow obstructions while plants are wet. If the bud ratio is high i leave on all the leaves. I also regardless of any wet trim always revisit the plants for a final dry trim. I prefer very little if and leaves on my bud unless they are fully caked with resin. Leaves can go in the freezer for trim/hash in my opinion.
Yes, I do. I also, like to leave the jar lids loose when I first put the bud into the jar, that way they can “burp” themselves. But once the bud is in the right humidity range I seal the jars and manually burp.
I’ve been meaning to give the grove bag a try though. Lots of people swear by them. I’ve been using canning jars for decades so I’m kind of slow to change things. lol
Highly recommend them. There is a post on here where folks discuss their grove bags. I honestly do my final trim, bag them toss a sensor, humidity pack into them
and throw them (literally) into a dark closet part of my garage. I don’t even look at them now until at least 2 months of cure has gone by.
A little something I learned this year .If you have a whole bunch of weed to trim and its already hung dry you can load up what you have thats not processed yet in sealable plastic totes from Dollar general and trim as you go and the weed cures in the tote as you trim.I had to do shifts this year i had so much weed i had several totes full it took me weeks to finish it and the totes kept my stash in pristine condition
The longer you grow the more reasons you have for more tools. Drying and trimming are no different. I have a large collection of quality trim scissors. They are only used a short time and back into the cleaner. I will keep four or five pairs or more in the solution at a time. This is the only thing that makes trimming any bit easier. Just make sure to wipe the cleaner off the scissors before you start trim. As far as curing and drying I actually find a place for every single item on this list and then some lol. I run a dryer I built. I have a separate wine fridge for long term storage. I have different strains in different points of cure and aging. Some in Grove bags. Some in glass jars and some in the large 17 L C Vaults. They all have an intended purpose and work well. I like to think of all of them as tools to help with quality and long term storage. Cheers Everyone !!!
17L C volts damn. I most definetly need to buy some trim scissors.
Thats alot of weed ![]()
I wet trim, dry at 60 rh 70f temp and that’s close enough for me. I use an inkbird and a humidifier.
Also when I trim I use multiple, and different kinds, of trimmers and scissors. That way I can gum them up with resin and then switch and then when they’re all caked I scrape them clean with a utility knife and smoke it.
Changing the type of trimmers several times also helps prevent repetitive stress discomfort.
Does that method preserve the terps well for you? What sensor are you referring to and what humidity pack?
