Ebb and Flow, Flood and Drain. Are people still using this method?

Where are the people growing in ebb/flow setups? Are there any journals here, or anywhere, with people currently running these systems. I’d like to see some cool ebb/flow setups for some potential inspiration.

Thanks.

I don’t have a grow diary just yet (hoping to get one up this week!), but I’m running a flood & drain setup. I have my reservoir outside the tent, and basically a sump pump setup under the trays to pump it back out to the res. It took a bit longer than anticipated to get everything humming along, but it seems to be working pretty well.

I’ve been trying to decide how best to explain/document my system, as far as what pictures are actually relevant, etc. Is there any particular aspect you’d most prefer to have pictures of (generally, not necessarily specific to my system)?

Might I direct you over here:

In the coming weeks I’m going to be doing a photo series on how I rebuild this system. It’s getting an expansion.

Finally got my grow diary started, including some pictures: C_in_CT's basement hydro

I need to see someone else currently or recently having good, efficient ebb flow setups to make me do it.

Have you read through this one? Mapito Eb & Flood - HLG starfleet - Strain Judging

I have.
I duno if there are people currently using ebb and flow consistently though. I’d like to see the grows/setups if there are any. Maybe on other forums?
I’ve tried most methods in some capacity (maybe not flowering), and the simplicity of some type of “flood and drain” setup or method of irrigation has been very appealing to me for a while now.

Hopefully (eventually) mine will be a reasonable example  second run starting with already-stunted autos doesn’t seem like it’s going to be a great representation of what kind of yield is possible, but y’know, that’s more grower inexperience I think than anything else. The system itself was fine.

Why you growing autos?

Basement is ~50°F, I am trying to do everything in my power to avoid running extra/major environmental controls. So I’m doing autos with a 100w aquarium heater in my res, and 24/0 lights to keep the tent warmer. Overall cheaper utility costs than running a heater in the grow room.

Basically just an experiment to see if I can get any sort of yield with minimal costs in winter. If not, then I will either take winters off or pursue one of a few possible options: install a hydronic baseboard unit in the basement so it runs with the upstairs units, take down the “finished” walls in the grow room and insulate it/the rest of the basement more, break down and use a space heater in the room or tent, maybe something else? We’ll see how it goes!

50*F when? Lights on or off? Winter or summer? Just curious now.
A propane burner co2 generator would add a little bit of heat and a little humidity as well as the co2.

edit: it’d be nice if if didn’t get so cold, if that is just the coldest lights off temp you mean. High temp with lights on could be way higher and with added benefit, as I’m sure you know.

50°F in the grow room in general in winter. Part of the rest of the basement runs ~5-7° warmer, but there’s a wall in between.

Lights on temp is running ~64°F in the tent, which is why I want 24 hours of lights on. Light’s still at a pretty low setting, but is at the top end of the light they “should” be getting at this stage, so temps should increase as the intensity can increase. Light is also only 220w, so even if it was running 24/0 at full power, it’s still less than most space heaters.

As far as co2, I’ve considered it, but I will probably hold off, because as supportive as my partner is of all of this, I think he might draw the line at “if malfunctioned, could kill one of our pets”

Could also use HID, like CMH bulb, in stead of LED. 65F is cold. Especially with led, the plants are probably ~5F colder than ambient.
You probably know all this, I’m just saying…

Yeah, this is basically an experiment to see if I can manage to grow in winter with minimal utility costs. If not as-is, I’ll do some basement modifications before attempting it again. The F&D setup is working perfectly though, regardless of temps! big fan of the bell siphon situation.

Used to do flood and drain back in the day 15 years ago veg for 4 to 6 days and kick had great results lol 1 oz buds and lots of them was thinking of getting back into it

Nice. Yea, one of the reasons I want to try is the ease of irriation, and setup. And as for the sog aspect, or at least more numerous yet smaller plants, I think the harvest and trimming would be easier/faster.

How many plants did you have in what square footage? like how many in a 4x4 area for example?

I cant remember i was trying many differnt numbers but on a 4 x 8 100 seemed to work for 3 day veg

I do an ebb and flow with buckets. Here’s a thread that gives you an idea of my setup…
