The Farmers Almanac says that in ancient Greece and Rome, the dog days were believed to be a time when dogs and men alike would be driven mad by the extreme heat.

That extreme heat, they thought, resulted from the fact that the sun is aligned with Sirius (the dog star) during this time of year.
