My parents used to say “You should respect your elders, but you don’t have to. Respect those who respect you though, and if an elder isn’t respecting you, they don’t deserve your respect anyway”
Why do I say this? Because respect is the basics for communication, and I mean EFFECTIVE communication. When individuals respect each other, ideas are exchanged. Without respect, they hardly listen to one another.
Do you have to be an original OG’er to get respect? I hope not. And I have been respected by those who I have interacted with here despite the fact that I’ve been on OG little more than a month, if that. But then again, I also give people respect… Do I have to be an original OG’er to care about a forum I recently joined? I don’t think so… My suggestions on this thread come from 10 years as being staff on a much larger forum. Might be a different topic, but a LOT of common themes (sponsors, giveaways, shilling, trades gone bad, rogue members, old guard, newbies, the list goes on). My suggestions here only come from years of experience there. I see the parallels and pitfalls…
I don’t really have any complaints about how OG is run, haven’t been here long enough to see issues with bad sales / trades, and I’ve had nothing but respect and acceptance from the members I have interacted with, likely because I take the time to post actual posts… Even as a newbie, if I see you have 100 posts, and all are just dibs or begs, and no real interaction with the forum, >I< would question their intentions. It didn’t take me long to realize who is in the know, who I might direct questions to (and I first grew back in 94/95, so I’m not inexperienced!), and who is just here for free shit. Sorry, but its hard to give respect to a leech because they don’t even respect the community. And I’m not labelling everybody who asks for free stuff as a leech, its pretty obvious who gives back, and who disappears… Other than that, I see a great group, a diverse group, of growers and breeders here who’s collective knowledge is more valuable than any free seeds that may be offered here… The generousity is amazing, and I guess that encompasses sharing knowledge as well as seeds. I just wish there were less people who ONLY post dibs, and don’t bother to post anything, anywhere else. Thats not very community oriented…
