F1 to F2 breeding question

Say you make a F1 that’s a product of two F2 strains that are cousins. Then you work that to F2. Next you make an F1 that’s a product of two F2 strains that are completely unrelated and then work that to F2 as well. Will both F2s show the same rate of variation?

I’m not an expert, but no.

F2 to f1 back to f2 will be more stable because the genetic line is more inbred.

When you f2 to f1 completely unrelated lines, your introducing a whole new set of recessive jenes that you need to bread out to reduce variation

Are you asking if lets say a purple x pink F2 is crossed with a red x blue F2 will the F2 generation of those show vast genetic variation?

To create a true f1 u you need to cross 2 inbred lines togeter. IBL x IBL = F1

I know what i wanna say in my head cuz i underdtand what ur saying but i cant find the right words to type down to have it make sense lol.

But…i think u would have more variation in the 2 unrelated lines!!! Bit who knows, i sure dont, lol

I had to retype that question like 30 times with my stoned ass for it to even make sense to me :rofl: I know there will be variation in any f2 I was just wondering if the rate of variation is determined by the family tree or if it’s a fixed rate for every f2

But yeah, im gonna say if u have more variety in the starting parents ur gonna have more variety in those offspring as opposed to somewhat related lines.

I think otsngotta b based off lineage amd not a fixed rate.

Id reckon it’s determined by family tree. Growing out a bunch of shakedown street f2s (chem D x wookie) with a buddy. Around 30 seeds started but so far with all plants at least 3 weeks into flower, we can only definitely identify two distinct phenos. A fast flowering chem smelling and a longer flowering chem smelling one. Possibly a few others but generally consistent plant to plant. All smell similar to chem. Was expecting to find at least 1 lavender pheno.

Compared to a strain like goji OG, the seedfinder specifically mentions f2ing the larger OG pheno to unlock a treasure trove of phenos in the f2.

I think the general answer is no. Making and F1 from related lines will not produce much variation, compared to an F1 from unrelated lines.

Having said that, nothing is absolute. It is possible to make an F1 from related lines, and end up with a lot of variation in the F2 depending on the plant selection. For example, crossing the plants with uncommon recessive traits will continue to dig in that genetic pool. Crossing plants with recessive traits will increase the odds of a progeny of terrible runts and mutants, but within a sea of 200 plants you will find some real treasures. Those treasures can then be worked in whatever direction you envision.
