First Grow - Late Summer Start

Circumstances (my state did not legalize growing until late June among other things) prevented a grow starting in May so I started seeds on 13 July 2021. My grow is one plant of each of the following strain in a square foot garden: White Widow, Gelato, Wedding Cake, and Zkittles. All seeds are auto flowers from ILGM.

White Widow and Wedding Cake have sprouted 7 and 8 days respectively after the sow date. White Widow is looking strong but Wedding Cake seems to be growing slower. Both had something attack the cotyledons shortly after sprouting; I put them under bells made from soda bottles after I found the damage. I also sprinkled the soil with cinnamon after observing ants in the garden bed.

I reseeded Gelato and Zkittles this past weekend since those seeds did not germinate.

It has been raining nearly everyday since 13 June. Today we finally had a nice sunny day. Both seedlings are starting their second set of true leaves this week.

Photos coming soonā€¦

Soil looks very organic!
Is that a commercial mix?

The soil is hand mixed. Itā€™s one part peat moss, one part vermiculite, and one part compost. The compost is a 50/50 mix of steer manure and garden compost. I wanted a compost mix of 1:1:1 of manure, garden compost, and mushroom compost but I couldnā€™t get my hands on the mushroom compost.

Looks very healthy!
Most interested in the White Widow,ā€¦ Autos are not something I have grown.
Have a friend wanting to do autos though.
Positive vibes to ya,
Keep the pics coming!

Too funny. I get a kick when I see people say cow for Cattle/bovine. First time I have seen steer instead of cattle/bovine.
Cow; mature female that has calved
Steer; castrated male bovine.
Now I need to see an analyses of the difference. Other than hormones?

Great to have you always happy to see a new grower trying autos and props for sowing straight into your outdoor beds Iā€™m an indoor grower for a reason to many things I canā€™t control outside but Iā€™m jealous of the outdoor growers for sure Iā€™ll be following along

For all I know it is cattle manure rather than specifically from steers. The label on the bag said ā€œSteer Manureā€ and I didnā€™t think too deeply on it.:grimacing::grinning:

Dammit! The newly-sprouted plants had a bad day. The cotyledons are missing from the Zkittles and the Gelato was bent over and dehydrated. Iā€™m putting a screen over the opening on the bells.

Wedding cake is still limping along and White Widow looks good.

I think ā€˜steer manureā€™ probably comes from True Living Organics by The Rev.
I recall he made a number of references to it (just checked, 24 ).

Iā€™m not casting ANY shade on The Rev.
His book was my grow bible initially. Lots of good stuff in there for anyone interested in soil grows. :sunglasses: :+1:

Probably time for me to re-read itā€¦

No, you didnā€™t steers have no balls and bullā€™s have balls. So your bull shit was missing its balls.
Only to be used for female ladies for flower. No seeds growing. I need sleep.
