Why was using coco not as good as pro mix

The maker of Octopot recommends Sunshine mix #4 or Promix HP. I thought I would use coco as I had been hand watering coco with Jacks nutes with good results, and thought coco would work just as well in Octopots. It didn’t. I had all sorts of problems start to finish. This run using Promix things are going great still using Jacks nutes. Im not saying you cant use coco in Octopots, but since I switched to the recommended medium things have gone much smoother. The exact reason why Im not sure about, but I felt like I was fighting nute lock out all the way through with the coco.

Good to know and out of likes.

I’m doing my first run of something I’ve put together I call the ΩPot which uses a 20L air-pot and a 10" net pot filled with hydroton as the initial wicking media with what was going to be straight promix BX on top in the airpot itself.

The more I looked into octopots here on OG and online in general the more I was concerned with going with just pure BX and have settled on 7L coco chips, 3L perlite and 10L promix BX. :crossed_fingers:

Proof, once again, that, when everything else fails, read the directions.

I’ve done 3 gallon hempys with 70/30 perlite/vermiculite with good results. I know there are others who use perlite/coco mixes in hempys.

I find the promix BX to be a finer grade when compared to promix HP
I do use the BX and I find it is better when adding 25 % course perlite

Happy clones = happy homes!

I love your sea of green here @Floyd and also wanted to share and thank you again for the gift of inspiration(s) currently growing here (up potted from solo-cups yesterday; day 12 from seed)

Are you talking about the black packaging stuff in the big box stores like this stuff?

I always buy bales from my local for about $35cnd/bale as it was the best $/lb rate so I’ve never tried the big-box store version. :man_shrugging:

Happy looking seedlings. Did 1 not pop or did you keep 1 just in case?

It gave a tap root that same time as the other 4. They all got the exact same treatment but sadly the 5th didn’t move past the initial spark.

Regardless of the stall, I kept caring for it but yesterday decided it was time to carefully dig to see what was going on… and the once white rootlet was still there, but nearly translucent. I’ve never seen this before but still grateful about the 4/5 being strong and healthy. :+1:

Oh yeah the good stuff

The HP around me is very expensive it’s like 75 $80 a bale where the BX is only around 35 but I find I have to add about 25% Perlite because it’s a finer grade of Pete moss
