Foreigner Goes Legal

LOL :joy:

“I don’t need to be Goethe, only understood”

It appears I am neither.

I should really know better because my FIL runs an organic farm that primarily attracts German university students because he speaks German but fuck if I understand any of it.

I especially liked the sorrow of young Werther and in particular because it’s still topical today.

I spent a lot of time in Germany and working with Poles, Germans, Swiss etc. once they realized I could understand them I was “required” to speak it with them. The Swiss always acted like they were going to hack up a lung and the Poles would rather have spoken any other language but Polish is just beyond me. Lol

As long as there is one mutual language in which you can both be understood you’re in good shape.

And laughing at someone trying to speak your language is a dick move. I’d like to hear them speak English.

Any Slavic language really. I end up biting myself. Lol

I’m half Finnish and just reading one sentence confuses the shit out of me. Why are there so many vowels?

To be fair you’d be hard pressed to find a German under the age of 60 who doesn’t understand English whether they’re willing to speak it or not.

Some Germans can be a little snotty about it, as though you shouldn’t open your mouth auf deutsche unless you’re perfekt but most I worked with became friends quickly. It made me mensch rather than American.

I love Goethe and Schiller, great read and actual than anything. Faust is my favorite.

Mrs Foreigner works for a German company so I hear Germans speak English all the time. To my ear it sounds a bit silly but I wouldn’t be such a dick as to mock them for it.

I tought myself English from second grade on because I wanted to know what method man told me in his songs and bloodhound gang lol

When you have no understanding of context it got weird pretty quick haha

As a slightly relevant aside in enjoy listening to music in languages I don’t understand. The vocals kind of turn into an instrument of their own and I find it a neat experience.

If you translate it directly it’s ‘mutterficker’ but no one says that actually

One of the coolest things about hip hop, IMO, is to go back in time and find music to listen to through what they have sampled.

If you don’t know Galt McDermot you should. He’s the white godfather of hip hop. Sampled everywhere.
