Hey how’s it going? I got a question I’m switching back to Fox farm ocean forest soil from Coco 70-30 and I just been using it as it is. I see people mixing it with other stuff. I’m just wondering what you mix it with and maybe I’m going to try it out I’m willing to try something new.
I always got better results from coco/hydro than I did with soil.
That bagged dirt is a ripoff IMO. Dirt belongs outside, in the ground, where it’s must cheaper & easier to DIY a mix.
Soil indoors is nasty, you live in there. You want all that worm/bat/fish shit inside with you? No thx.
Hydro is my main expertise I have the most experience with hydro but the place I’m growing at would make it very hard to do it there for several reasons so I’ve been doing cocoa for the last couple months and I just need to learn more about it and I wasn’t really pleased so I switch back to soil
I use fox farm in my soil runs, I mix one back ocean forest with one bag happy from and add some perlite to it then I run amendments after about a month one they go in the 5 g. Straight happy frog for seedlings and starter pots. This coming run will also try a little vermiculite.
Fox farm makes a bunch of soils, which one(s) are you using? They’re all pretty good at what they do out of the bag.
I’m using Ocean Forest
what was the problem you were having with coco?
I use 1 part megacrop with tap water, haven’t met a plant that didn’t like it. My tap water is pretty good though.
I had a bad experience with Ocean Forest last year where I got the soil from a hydro store and later on I found several bugs and I had issues with thrips so I decided to try out Coco. Coco is fine but it seems like there’s some stuff I need to learn about it so I switch back to Ocean Forest
I think most of the stuff I was having the issue was the cal mag. I don’t know what this buffering stuff was and I didn’t know that you’re supposed to flush out the cocoa before you start using it
It depends on what you buy, they sell pre buffered bricks you just re hydrate and add perlite to. I never had to add anything but some orca & bloom boosters in flower.
Didn’t mean to sound like a dick but I can get a cubic yard of soil delivered to my house for the price of two of those bags.
I do a 50/50 mix of ocean forest with promix hp/cc and feed with Heavy 16. Works well for me and plants seem to really enjoy it.
I use a 50/50 mix of ocean forest and happy frog. I start out with happy frog for seeds and seedlings because it’s not as “hot” as the ocean forest. When I uppot I use the mix but don’t apply nutes for awhile because of the nutes in the soil, maybe 3-4 weeks or until plant starts to show signs that it needs something. But by then I’m uppotting into a bigger pot with the mix again, so no nutes again for 3-4 weeks. Then flower. I do notice bugs that come from the soil. I use a fan pointing directly at the soil to eliminate them. Good luck @redblueblur993 .
Anyone telling you to go with hydro over soil because they had some issues with it is misleading, both can be done very well indoors.
There is more than one way to skin a cat…
Used it exclusively since 2002 or so. Of course ive had a bad batch or whatever but 90 percent of the time its good. I use it start to finish but im a less is more guy too. Literally nothing but water and cal mag for the longest.
I add nothing to the stuff, but if i would suggest adding more perlite. Ive had so many people tell me to get with the times and use coco why grow soil yields suck. Tried it 3x wasnt for me.
I too use Happy Frog for seedlings and Ocean Forest for veg and then up pot to Strawberry Fields for flower.
I have seen that strawberry fields before, I always wondered if it would do good in flower, beings that it’s designed for flower. Does it work pretty good for you for flower?
I have used it for years I think it works well, along with nutrients.
Used Happy Frog for years with zero problems, in my experience Ocean Forest might be a little too much for seedlings and autos, some strains
I’ve used them both for years and can’t complain except for the occasional bad bag with fungus gnats from being stored outside my guess… happy frog contains dolomite and usually chunkier texture while ocean forest has oyster shells among other amendments. Neither will last past a month without top dressing or feeding although bigger container size I’ve gotten away with only watering and recharge. Moisture levels are so important just like coco but dry pockets of soil will result in all kinds of issues along with the obvious over-watering which can kill young plants. I’ve used strawberry fields occasionally and intended for flowering stage but good texture. Other favorite soil brands for me are coasts of Maine, roots organic, and random super soil mixes
Now if i had more funds id go back to subcools super soil. That recipe is awesome and the terps are so good using it with all that blood, bone meal, and guano teas.
