When I was using fox farms I liked to do early plants in happy frog w/ 25% perlite added, then up potting to a 7 gallon with the upper half happy frog, and the lower half ocean forrest. Both with added perlite. The ocean forrest is a little hot for young plants and some cultivars get nutrient burn, so better to allow your small veg plants establish in the happy frog. In 7 gallon fabric pots I only ever top dressed with kelp meal teas and Earthworm castings and the plants always seemed well fed. I did get the gnats as well a couple of times, if you have the time I recommend putting the soil in black contractor bags laid out in the sun for a few days before use to try and burn off the chance of gnats
