Freaker’s Ball Preservation Project 2021: Arakku Valley

Arakku is not in much danger of Extinction at the moment. As long as the present generation of Growers is alive, Arakku Valley will be fine. It’s the Next Generation that want to grow nothing but skunk or Kush that don’t have the interest in these landrace varieties. When the old timers go, many times these land races go with them. Not That they would be extinct immediately, just held in a smaller and smaller Circle of people, making it harder and harder to find. Unfortunately the trend is in that direction, and if nothing is done about it there is a dire threat to all landraces. When the large populations are lost, the diversity in them that makes them special goes with it. We are spreading awareness and with any luck a bunch of seeds to Overgrowers too.

Wow I’m finding this super awesome! I’m really interested in looking into these old strains. Are these seeds available at seed banks? I’m new to growing but I’d be very interested in breeding more and spreading seeds as much as I can when I get good at growing. My first grow I’m starting right now is specifically for breeding to see the natural life of these plants. And stock up on seeds too lol. I’d love to help play a part here if that’s possible, and look forward to watching this diary!

Makes me think of how you used to find multiple varieties of produce in the grocery store. Now you can choose from some varieties of apples, but broccoli and basically every other vegetable, you just get to choose from one variety. Folks that never saw the numerous types of carrots and tomatoes, just assume that’s all there is in the world. It’s a sad prospect, but seems to align with these Landrace preservations. I’d love to carry on these lines.

Well folks as I stated in the beginning I hit a brick wall lol these landrace seeds are definitely out of the norm for me on germinating . We have 1 plant going , some seeds opened up waiting for tap toots to shoot out . Because I’m stubborn and can not accept failure I ordered more seeds so they should be here soon and they will go to the seed mat. This seed mat is a new learning situation in itself for me also lol

That’s commitment right there buddy. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

It’s driving me crazy lol . I don’t have it in me to give up , it may be a long bumpy road but I’m going to make it across that finish line .

Has anyone tried dropping some rooting hormone on stubborn seeds that don’t want to seem to send out a tap root, when they are already opened up ?

Interesting idea. I’m not sure it would work but might be worth a shot. I know the hormone basically creates a “cancer” that causes it to rapidly produce cellular growth. You might need a scarified site to cause that to happen.

I was hoping the sprout walls would be soft enough to absorb the hormone . Never that easy

there was a Mekong Haze - Delata9 Labs.
Despite the Haze-Name, it was actually pure Cambodian.

Well, multiple people had zero Germination.
The only one person that had suxxess said he cracked the Beans at day 1.

This one’s still going strong , have more seeds germinating and more ordered and on their way .

I have more, too if needed. Ordering more seeds. That is dedication! I will mention again for everybody that I killed 50 lolab Valley seeds last spring, and two-thirds of my Moroccans. All hybrid seeds are very similar. All landrace seeds are very different. It’s a learning curve for everybody. You should look into one of those miniature seed-starting greenhouses. I’ve had lots of Success With It and a heating pad. Any Garden store that sells seeds this time of year will have one of them for less than $20. Probably less than 10$. For landrace seeds that come direct from the country of origin, I won’t say it’s a must, but I haven’t discovered another way that works.

That’s a nice-looking sativa right there! Our friend @ShivamGrover just scored some nice araku Valley bud over in India. Hopefully he shows up here soon to tell us about it

This was my go-to cloner/propagator for many years. I still use it for hard to pop seeds. It’s an ice tray used to make cubes that’ll fit in a water bottle.

What I like about it is it’s very easy to keep the media moist without overwatering it. I drilled three tiny holes in each of the bottom holes the tubes seat into. You can’t really tell from the picture, but there’s a 1/4" gap between the lip on the bottom cover, and the surface it sitting on.

I put the bottom on, fill the tubes with vermiculite, set it in a baking dish, and fill it with an inch or so of water until the verm at the top of the tube is moist then I dump the excess water.

Seeds are in paper towels, and once I have tails, I plant them into the tray. I set it on my seedling mat, and set the temp to 85f. That puts the temp in the tubes between 82-75.

I don’t use a dome with seedlings because it’s so easy to keep the moisture level up. You put enough water in it to just fill that 1/4" gap. When it’s gone, just refill it to the same spot. The verm will be moist, but not wet. When I can pull the bottom off and see roots, it’s time to repot.

This is where dumb-ass luck plays into it. The first time I used it I quickly realized I had no way to get the plants out. :upside_down_face: Fortunately, the plunger on a 20cc horse syringe fits perfectly into those tubes, so I can push the entire verm plug out of the tray. I make a hole in the soil the same size, and just drop it in.

They don’t make these anymore, or I’d buy a dozen of them. For hard to root cuttings they work just as well, but I do use a dome for those.
:guitar:

I just realized that since they don’t make these anymore, my whole post is kinda pointless. Unless someone has a case of them I guess. Sorry for clogging up your log man. I’m out.

Still a good post. I bet someone can jerry-rig something like that. Lots of clever people here on OG. As soon as the seeds germinate I take them out of the biodome. Definately too moist for plants.

Just a little pic update of the one seed we got going , been having temp issues in the germination box so waiting until that levels out before strating anymore. Hopefully this one is female lol

Then we have this one that’s growing weird , instead of growing up its growing in a spiral so I’m just watching to see what it does just for fun

If you buy a seed mat , DO NOT TRUST it to only get 75 to 85 , temp will definitely get higher , lesson learned with my first time using seed mat .

I find it’s best to get a short timer and put the mat on for 2-3 minutes every 1/2 hour is enough.
