From seed to jiffy to...

Hello guys, back on the blog after almost four years. Unfortunately I didn’t have the space and the place to grow again, but i needed to take care of myself through the esternal of myself (ego, alter, alter ego, as an italian anthropologitst once said). So I’ll keep you posted with this new journey.
Let’s start from the equipment and the location: I’ve got an 80x80x180 tent with a Sonlight apollo plus hyperled 192w. I placed it in my room near the window but no sun goes directly on it. I’m going to grow four plants: a vegetative state of 18 hours for one month and an half/two months; a flowering state of 14 hours for almost the same amount of months. The seeds I use are from an italian grower which use Spanish seed and try to mix them up (I know i’m not using the correct language at all, I please you to correct me). The seeds are: 1 Gorilla glue, 2 Sorbetto all’arancia (Orange sorbet), 1 Covid.
I started by germinating them in a cotton circle, those used to clean up the makeup, for about 2/3 days in the dark. When the white stem was out, I putted them in the jiffy for another 3/4 days still in the dark. Three of them are out with the shell of the seed on the top, the last one seems it’s coming out but I think it is dead because the top part does not has and seed shell or any beginning of a leaf.
I’ll leave them there for maybe another day then I’ll transfer them in a 6,5 L vase with a light Mix biobizz substrate.

Please comment and give advice of the germination state, on the substrate ecc…
Thankss

Yeah those plants want more :sun_with_face: for sure. Leggy and still helmeted.
Additionally what are you temperatures?

Temperature is between 16/19 C°. I’ll put them under the light if you say so.

Those temps are kinda low as well. Once I got my seedlings averaging 22-25c with a heat mat they keep growing insane.

I germinate in the dark and put them in the light as soon as they sprout.

I cover mine in a 4" square pot to create darkness with mottled light spots (from the holes in the pot), and then once they breach the surface this comes off and they open up with the direct light.

Once I see they have tails, into solo cups and under my mini LED’s they go for a week or 2 before they hit the big Veg light. It’s my 1st run with the mini LED’s and I’m digging them so far.
It allows them to get some roots going and they don’t seem to stretch for the light like they do under the Veg light. Those that have helmet head, I will carefully take my sterilized tweezers and take the helmet off.

Okay so, I putted them on the heat mat and under the sun, later I’ll put them in the tent with the light on. I will even put an heater to make the place hotter, around 22-25c. What about the jiffy that didn’t really sprout? should I germinate another seed?

You say it’s cold - they are slow when they are cold.

I usually figure they’re dead if I don’t see anything for 10 days. But maybe give it 2 weeks given it’s chilly.

Thanks to all of you. This community is precious.

Stand and lights were originally intended for my cloner, but figured what the hell, might as well try it for starting plants. And the mini A/C Infinity LED’s are doing a great job.

A brand worthy of travelling down that rabbit hole!

Things of theirs I currently want/need:

Cloudforge T3 = drying tent.
Cloudforge T7 = my flowering tent.
Controller 69 = all my tents

I actually have wanted 2 of their extractors (fans) for a while, my buddy has a tent, controller etc. it’s pretty cool and convenient. The tent seems thick similar to my gorillas in fact

You can spray water on the seed pod and cover it with a plastic bag. The pod should pop off within a day.

@TopShelfTrees1 these are the 11”, would have preferred the 16” but they have been on back order for quite a while. They just had limited stock of the 11” UV minis, so had to order a set of those too. LOL

Okay guys I putted the jiffy on the mat inside the grow with the lights on. the temperature is now of 27.4c but it will eventually low down at 25-26c.

my situation makes me laugh compared to the upper image. I don’t know if It’s better put them in the vase or keep them like this for another day.

Hey there, I followed you advice and I couldn’t do better. yesterday I stared the vegetative cycle on 18h per day. With more light and heat all four seeds sprout, even the one who I assumed was dead now it putted out two little sleeves and its getting straight. Of the other plants two completely lost the shell of the seed, the other on has half of it on. Here’s the picture:

I’m keeping them wet by spraying water now and then. I think I will wait for the little one to get up a little bit and than I will transplant all of them in the 6,5 L vases.

I’d even let them dry out just a little bit. It’s a balance at this stage.

Good, I’ll do that.
