RIP. One of my sunflowers already snapped the top foot and a half off in the storm last night. It wasn’t one of the tallest ones, thankfully, but still at least 8-9ft and growing fine so that sucks. I have a feeling that they’re gonna start falling one by one before they even flower lol. A really healthy candy roaster vine next to it that was at the top of the trellis also snapped the top foot and a half off but that one will just shoot out side branches and probably be better for it so I don’t care too much.
Just finished weeding and watering, things are looking nice! Might need to give my corn bed some extra food here soon though! Starting to look a little pale maybe?
I clipped my broken sunflower down to head height and tried to graft the top back on to the stem lol. I know it probably won’t work but who knows.
Comfrey!? Ready for first cut. I hate to take it out while it’s still flowering but the base is sending up new leaves. I’ll leave it in a pile for a few days and the bees will continue to hit it in the pile. Left a few stalks up too.
Got lucky with some coneflower seeds
Japanese maple kashima
A little sunshine would be nice, lol. Strawberries are small this year, only getting a half a solo cup daily. Got bluebirds ready to fledge from one box and then I have 2 boxes with wrens and their babies.
First lettuce is in, arugala, cabbage and more lettuce shortly. Bush beans are starting to have beans. I just popped 10 Early girl bush tomatoes for round 2 and pole beans are just breaking ground. Can’t seem to get many squash to pop. A virtual shitload of annual flowers should be showing relatively soon. Petunias, snapdragons, zinnias, bachelor buttons, milkweed, ruby celosia and marigolds.
I saw an ag extension that said hit them hard with nitrogen right when they are knee high…so yeah man, start peeing on them ![]()
Still the only Candy Roaster I have pollinated along with a single Tromboncino lol.
Dumb birds also ruined about a cup of my raspberries today by eating just half of every one now that the mulberry trees are empty. I still got about a half a cup of good ones, though. I’m definitely gonna put up a net for the 2nd round of berries later in the season but I didn’t expect it to be worth it yet.
Blood meal is my go to nitrogen weapon ![]()
Most of my birds leave the strawberries alone. Raspberries are another matter entirely. I try to stay ahead of them. The cowbird is the worst one and I believe when he sees me picking he doublesteps his pace and he is 1 bite 1 berry. He scowls at me a bit too I think…like I’m taking his berries. ![]()
Yes man my strawberries and blackberries are never safe from birds but also squirrels and chipmunks. We have a ton of critters in my area that enjoy taking a big bite out of the fruit and allowing it to rot.
Chipmunks pull that crap here. They will pick them green and set them on a plank or on top of a pot until they ripen up. That’s not fair, lol.
Nice man I haven’t grown eggplant in a while those are always fun…love the elephant ears too
I have a bunch of alfalfa pellets I just figured they might take a little too long to break down, I should’ve spread some of those around like a month ago
Yup! It’s the cowbirds eating my raspberries lol. I quit strawberries because of too many years in a row where I barely got to harvest any that weren’t ruined by animals or bugs.
Wife ask was it possible to grow pineapple. Looked it up and I see it is possible. So day before yesterday, I decided to give it a try. Seems easy enough.
Well we do have progress. Took a lil cup and added some water. Put a lil Trifecta Mycorrhizal Supreme in the water and didn’t expect anything but I was wrong. We have some roots starting.
Also have a bit of new growth deep in the bush. Guess I’ma try an grow us a pineapple.
It’ll take years to get one from what I’ve seen. Good luck!
Yeah. Anywhere from 18 months to 3 years just to start fruiting. That’s with perfect conditions. USDA zone 10 is optimal growing conditions. I’m between 8 an 9. That’s a lot of time to be waiting on some pineapple.![]()
Before and after staking our corn up a bit! The wind has been crazy and it was basically sideways on some and looks a lot happier now, still wanna get them a little more supported though
Also, does anyone know what’s eating my peppers before I can get to them?
Plus bonus round cute harvest picture my wife took tonight, we’ll probably make a small batch of green hot sauce with the green peppers! A couple poblanos, and then a bunch of serranos, crackle peppers, and some durangos that weren’t turning red and were all corked up
Those are dang caterpillars that make that hole . Theres a worm inside likely.
