Germinating rose seeds , how to?

Off normal topic but does anyone have experience germinating rose seeds? From what I’ve read online it’s a bit tricky . Any help would be appreciated.

Not off topic at all brother, we grow, doesn’t have to be just weed. I am interested in this as well so will be watching your thread.

I hand pollenated a bunch of roses and now I have all these seeds and I’m not sure how to germinate them and was hoping someone else here would have some expexperience.

I have to wonder if @Meesh has some. She has an amazing garden.

I’ve germed a miniature rose bush seed before. Vermiculite worked well, but you have to get them out of there pretty quickly once they sprout. Mine died after leaving them too long in there. Took maybe 10 days to come up. Never tried to germ regular rose seeds before as most rose bushes are grafted to a stronger stock. You will get a rose bush of course, but they are never as hardy, disease and pest resistant and all that other stuff that’s been bred into grafted varieties for hundreds of years to be what we call roses today. Sounds like you have a bunch to experiment with though… could be fun. Try a few different mediums.

@Meesh I had a red climbing bush , a wild rose bush , and one called under the rainbow or something of the sort that was a small bush . I cross pollenated all 3 with each other and collected a bunch of seeds . So I need them in soil dang I was hoping I could germinate them like cannabis lol

Try it! It could work. I really think a professional quality african Violet soil (well soil less mix) would work best. The finer the medium the better luck I had with germing the minis. If memory serves me @TrevorLahey played around cross pollinating roses before and grew a few resulting bushes. Maybe he can throw in some wisdom on germing them. :+1:

Never cross pollinated. Lots of grafting and a little bit of cloning them over the years. In fact I’ve never grown a rose from seed. People put them in and out of the fridge to wake them from dormancy (stratification) or depending on your climate you can achieve this by germinating them outdoors. Other than that I don’t think theres anything special required it’s just business as usual.

Well ill give it a go I suppose. I have over 100 rose seeds lol so I’ll put some in soil and some in the freezer for a week or so and then into soil and see what happens.

There was a gigantic wild rose bush where I used to work.
Picked a bunch of rose hips from it.
Tried the paper towel/baggie method and got an initial sprout but they died quickly after that.
Soil would be my next attempt.
