That’s a loaded question; because every “brand” of Sour Diesel has a loyal following. For example - you have the “main” breeders:
Karma Genetics
Top Dawg
Shoreline Genetics
Skunktek
GabySI
Uncle Doobie
Connoisseur Genetics (I’m on the hunt for his genetics now)
Aficionado (the Alderpoint Sour Diesel - don’t waste your time, it’s not even close)
…those are just a few that work with “Sour Diesel”, and then you have the specific cuts, i.e. “AJ’s Cut”, Wing-Wang cut, Chaco’s cut, RiRi cut, and many more…
The best Sour Diesel is going to be preference, and AJ’s Sour Diesel is a “commercial cut” that’s one of the most widely shared and liked. Start with that cut, yes - it should be a good representation of Sour Diesel, and if you like it, that’s all that matters. That’s the bottom line - something YOU like.
From my “limited” experiences - the Karma Genetics Sour Diesel is what I consider “classic” Sour Diesel. I only say this because it’s a product of Rez’s Sour Diesel - and that was the best around back in the early 2000’s.
The Sour Diesel RiRi cut going at the moment (it’s believed this is from the early Rez Sour Diesel) is very impressive; it has the Aroma, Structure, Frost - everything I’m looking for. She brings me back to the 90’s, when strains like Massachusetts Super Skunk was going around.
She’s just getting cut down now - so no smoke report yet. Regardless, She’s the most impressive Sour Diesel for this round. I’ll post up some pics soon.
It was more than a decade ago but I grew the AJ cut, and it’s pretty good. I’ve smoked a few other lines that might have been a bit better in my opinion. But never ran them.
When you’re going from seed, it’s like buying a scratch off ticket. Some vendors, you got a really high chance of winning in that pack. But it’s not a guarantee. Bigger numbers increase your odds of finding something stellar.
If UPS does their job I’ll get a chance to try the GabySI cut. That same vendor also offers the “original” SD, she looks exactly like I remember, maybe a little chunkier.
Looks very much like the William’s Wonder I kept from Stray’s beans. I still have 5 left to grow out that will make it into the rotation. I miss that stuff. It was magic for my restless leg syndrome and I miss having it around. I have one from Neuro’s WW Seed run going. Sadly I scorched the other one with ferts when it was a wee baby. I will be starting some from time to time.
I don’t know @Gabysi - but he seems like a very cool dude, just from watching the link @sober posted in the Sour Diesel thread (link below). Other people too - all getting good looking clones, the way it should be.
The other Diesel I want to try is from @Connoisseur_Genetics - his genetics are old school, and that’s something I look for - as a seed head.
I fully believe strains should be shared and not hoarded, and I’m willing to do an F2. I just want it to be proper work, and we know the F2 can be very heterozygous population. (sometimes that can be a good thing)
I always wanted to breed something - all these years, I always focused on growing, rather than breeding…and now realize that I need to start making seeds of some of the strains I have. Some are getting real old.
Would it be better and easier to do an S1? I’m open to suggestions.
I want to make “seed making” the next step in my journey with this plant. I just picked up the “breeders bible” to gain a little more knowledge of breeding. I get the basic idea, but also like to read a book too.
PS - I’ll post up the pics of the Sour Diesel RiRi soon, I just didn’t have a chance this weekend. Was dealing with some other unexpected issues - you know how life goes…
Doing S1’s are usually not easier and most would prefer you do f2 of the bx2 I would assume. It would be nice to search for a male to pull from for future breeding purposes as well. Did you take a clone of the riri you are running now?
Yea I got in on the auctions when they first started. Scored a pack for 90$ of some Mota Rebel Swamp Gas. Now I think more people know about it and so the prices have risen on most stuff being auctioned there. The GLG auction as well.
When I make S1 or S2s I start by making many clones…the one you reverse you trash, then you want the clones to use the pollen on. It can be a pain in the ass process and that is why you want a few clones on hand…plus back ups…
Regs are easy enough…both instances it’s best you use two separate rooms for these processes…once you pollinate a plant, I let it set 24 hrs then spray the whe plant with water to kill any stray pollens and return it to the flower room/tent.
It might be best if you use regs first and make some F2s, depends on your confidence and skill…I believe you could start with either and be fine.
Definitely easier to just make f2s, isolate your male selection(s). I use my bathtub. When female(s) are ready I move them to bathtub as well and let them get to know each other for a couple hours. Then I use male to shake and rub across the female. Then they spend another 24-48 hours in bathroom. Then I wet the male with water spray and trash him. Then I wet the female and let her sit for a couple hours, then she gets moved back to flowering space.
Pro Tip: when you bring female to bathroom make sure she is relatively dry and ready to be watered. This allows you to give it a good wet down after pollination before returning her to flower room avoiding accidentally pollinating other stuff in your flower room and avoiding over watering your pollinated female(s) .
Hey Guys, and all the rest that have followed along - I’ve had a lot going on lately, and the garden got a bit neglected, but finally went in yesterday, to take the final pics before Sour Diesel RiRi cut comes down.
I’ll split it up into two (2) posts; I took a bunch of pictures, trying to show the actual Sour Diesel RiRi cut - pictures never do it justice. In reality, her buds are sticky, rock hard, and stink like an old school Sour Diesel should…when you get a wiff, it’s “skunky, fuel, diesel”, but with a nice follow through of SOUR (mouth puckering, eye squinting, sourness). Yes - she is loud, and my nose is muted from all the other strains around, but she stands out for sure.
I’m about to take her down - 12 weeks now - so she’s over due perhaps. Also - this was a “torture chamber” - never got to do any ventilation, she got the basics - no pampering or special treatment. People talk about “hermies” - Nothing here - she is True and True. Her buds are ridiculously heavy.
It definitely has the Sour Diesel bud structure looks great.
After you shouted the seed bank where you got em I checked but this strain was put. However I was able to point someone in Europe to that bank (the name escapes me) who wanted to buy real genetics as opposed to the white label stuff he’s been growing before.
…I took some of these pics using an “HPS light filter”, but was difficult to always get the camera into focus. I try to get the best representation of a plant with an old cell phone - yeah, my cell phone is about 10 years old…haha.
Also, you’ll notice a “bent/almost broken” branch (pics 3-5) - this happened about mid flower, and got me to stake up the rest of the plant. Somehow, the branch fell over again - and it stayed this way throughout the rest of flowering - and she just kept cranking right along. For all those out there, that think SD is a difficult grow - this just shows how resilient she is.
Great work! She looks awesome and those scents sound absolutely perfect, I hope they hold up in cure. Can’t wait to hear how she smokes and I bet that fingertip/trim hash will be delicious too
This one turned out really nice; Lemon Diesel - (Lemoncello x Karma Genetics SD)
Lemoncello = BC Sweet Skunk (bonafide old school heirloom)
This strain was made be fellow OG member @NWSun , and it’s soo Nice, I reached out to him for more beans. It has a nice powerful aroma of “lemon, skunk, diesel, fuel” - and when I get a whiff of it, it brings me back to the 90’s.
The funny thing is I was hunting around for a “good” Lemon Diesel (I was trying to find Bodhi’s - because heard good feedback). This one is it - if you need GENUINE Lemon Diesel - give a shout out to Will. He’s also works with other strains too - he just did some Root Beer Freeze work. …was telling me it’s an impressive strain, and much easier to “deal with” than Sour Diesel. His genetics are 1st class.
I was about to take her down, but had an emergency, and only took down the top branch. Below is a picture of the 1st bud I took down. She’s consistent - all the buds look like the one pictured below. They’re all frosty, sticky, and heavenly aroma of lemon, fuel, skunk, dank.
