This is what i will be doing also as soon as i can… i truly want to find the very closest versions of white widow white rhino sour diesel northern lights the real skunky skunk if it ever friggin surfaces again… ( i know it existed! ) maui waui acapulco gold hindu kush blueberry grandaddy purple gorilla glue 4, blue dream … and many others from the 90s… or earlier…
Anyone know where to source these as the closest to original effects and bouquet and physical appearance ?

I like your enthusiasm - same way I feel about all the classics - for sure! I grew up on Massachusetts Super Skunk - had the original for over 15 years, and unfortunately lost it around 2010ish - it’s been tough to find anything that comes close to the skunky scent and soaring power it had. But we pop and search - and continue to pheno hunt.
As for breeders, I would start right here, and see who is working the strains you’re interested in. This place has some of the best talent around. period. …Although I’ve never bred anything myself, I’ve made a lot of great connection here - connecting with breeders and trying out their work.
There are seed banks offering the strains you’re searching for too - but please use caution, as soon as you type in a strain, you’re going to get results for the hi-traffic commercial seed banks - which is basically “white label” beans, and I think there’s a website for that too…haha.

I agree man, i think it should be noted for sure… i believe we have a thread called seedbanks who can we trust… alot of decent info there as far as seedbanks… its a long thread of the intricates of the good the bad and the ugly lol
But i think identifying the best closest matches for the originals is equally important… i hope people really chime in on all that… because nothing helps more than someone who has the
1 . knowledge of what the true cultivar was like in its original best form
2. Knowledge of who currently has the closest thing to that for each classic cultivar
No better place than somewhere like overgrow to find these answers

Northern Lights:
AKBB has a few versions from 80’s and 90’s his stuff is always legit and always good.
Authentic Genetics has Northern Lights 2 and 5 as well as one of both their parents Purest Indica, which is amazing! The story is the seeds are from the freezer of Seattle Greg, the guy who bred Northern Lights. I believe the story, others don’t. I’ve grown out these seeds and they are great.

There’s a 79’ Maui Wowie Cherry Bomb that’s as close to the original that there is going around this forum, and you can buy those online as well but beware of fakes from retailers. I have no links.
Acapulco Gold:
Colorado Sativa’s has lots of awesome strains including 2 Acapulco Golds the purple one sounds like the best option.

DJ Short is the creator of the popular Blueberry strain and still sells it, but some say it’s not as good as it once was.

Dave from AK Bean Brains is great source of knowledge, and a really nice dude. He always gets back to me with any questions I have about his strains; and knows their history - the source of how they made it into his hands.
He’s been around for a long time too, not like some of the other seed companies that pop up, create their own “new strain” by crossing some modern hybrids together (so many people & companies doing this - I believe this is going to be the downfall of the future of cannabis genetics - things are getting bottlenecked with everyone crossing the same genetics over & over, but giving it a new name)…apologize for the rant - but this is the sad truth… “generally speaking” many newer strains are all sweet, fruity, candy - and all have a “relaxing” effect.
Say goodbye to Sativas like Super Silver Haze - I was blown away that you can’t get this strain at many of the dispensaries. They push the strains that are EZ growing, high yield under LED lights, EZ trim, and FAST flowering (they won’t grow anything that takes longer than 8 weeks); it’s all commercial now-a-days. There’s no “kind bud” at dispensaries - and if there is, is in very limited quantities… ok-I’m done ranting…back to AKBB
AK Bean Brains is probably your best bet if you want to go back to some of the classics. They’re tried and true genetics; and he has the info to back up each of his strains.
For example, the Williams Wonder is at F4 now, and here’s what Dave had to say when I asked about the source:
My WW is in f4
I got it from the original purchaser who got it from SSSC, he increased it open to f2, I open pollinated it to f4

@Terpsnpurps - we need a “collector’s website”, where everyone (old timers and young guns) - can post the genetics they have sitting in their stash… There’s so much “fire” out there, that will probably get tossed into the trash (by cleaners, or family members that don’t know any better) when someone takes the eternal dirt nap.
The other thing people tend to do - is buy like 10 packs of a strain when it’s released. …When I see a new drop, I grab a pack or two for myself, and within 15minutes - the entire lot is sold out. And then I see people posting pictures of their “mail package” with 10+ packs of the same strain (sometimes more, sometimes less) The Hoarding is ridiculous.
…Yeah - I was generalizing the current seed/genetics situation, and you’re right - it applies to the “commercialized cannabiz” only.
All the boutique breeders like AKBB, StrayFox, Doc D, Santero, and many, many others like them - are still doing a great job with the genetics they’re working with. The OG breeders are awesome.

@Tomahawk I order fresh flower from time to time from WNC-CBD when they have something I don’t, or if I wanna try something before growing it. They are legit. They have some old-school strains, and they grow all organic. Most strains if not all are living soil. Shipping takes about a week, but the flower is definitely good.
I just ordered, Durban Poison, Mendo Purps, Acapulco Gold, Green Crack, Jack Herer, and Chem de la Chem. They had Alaskan Thunder Fuck too but I missed out. Lame!
Give them a look, they always have a few old school things and lately they’ve had a bunch.
